[dc]H[/dc]istory features many stories of Great Love. Paris and Helen, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, Willy and ALF: the list goes on. I bear witness to such a Great Love each day here in Hogan Manor: Rags the cat’s love for his ‘brother’ Nigel, and his love for plastic bags filled with yarn.

nigel and rags

Aw jeez aw jeez

In the beginning, both cats were at odds. Or just odd. Either way, there was hissing and growling as well as ‘cat fighting.’ Then, like a son beaten down by his mother for an overdue visit,¹ Nigel caved and let Rags share his world. It is not uncommon to watch the pair chase each other and play, to snooze nearby, or even, much to our enjoyment, partake in kitty grooming.

Rags enjoys giving Nigel a bath, as you can see in my low-light phone video. Such a sight is now a near daily spectacle. It melts my heart of ice, and makes me delete my strongly worded GIFs to the editor. Nigel, similar to a bride-groom learning it isn’t all about him, slowly but surely, reciprocates the grooming. Sure, the pair still wrestles, but that’s just what cats do. As long as we don’t see any blood, everything is fine.

Zzzz.

Rags’ other Great Love is for Stephanie’s bags of knitting yarn (as mentioned before). Rags uses the bags like a mattress or pillow, as you see above. We don’t know if he likes the yarn, or the bags, or the combination of the two, but the sight is too adorable.

Good grief. THAT FACE

Aw jeeez. Rags sleeps on his back, like all the time (the space kitty bag in the background is by Jess Fink. I got it for Stephanie as a Christmas gift). It is the strangest thing, but also cute. Too cute, perhaps. Maybe Rags is luring us into a state of relaxed awareness, and then BAM! He’ll eat all our deli turkey and take a nap on my turntable.²

¹ “I just saw you at Christmas!”
² He has a sixth sense when it comes to deli meat. If you even touch the container in the fridge, Rags is there in a flash.
