[dc]I[/dc] am new to the art commission game. It is a fun game though, and helps me earn extra money. A commission is when a client hires an artist to draw/paint a picture for them. Easy.

Many cartoonists sell commissions for extra income—and it makes for great drawing practice too.

I’m working on a new commission now (it is a surprise gift, so I can’t talk about it yet), but I sent off another commission a couple of weeks ago—all the way to Tennessee (the state, not the stripper at the corner bar).

Here is the finished drawing, which my client, Katy, had framed and matted on her own (the drawing survived its trip to Tennessee).

She framed me!

Katy saw a photo on Facebook of a similar drawing (see below) I did at the Cherry Capital Comic Con and contacted me about buying a copy.

platypus drawing

The original drawing I drew at C4.

This meant I had to redraw the picture—which I was all too happy to do. The Cherry Capital Comic Con sketch I did in about 20 minutes, for Katy’s commission I could take my time (a few hours in this case).

It helped I had the photo of the original to base the new drawing on, so most of the logistics were already worked out–I just jazzed it up a bit.

Pencils.

Here are the finished pencils of Katy’s commission. I looked up images of the Nashville skyline to add a little extra touch (mainly, the ‘Batman building.’)

Final inks.

Now, with the finshed inks. I used a combination of Micron pens and Tombo brush pens (especially a N75, the gray).
