No big deal, just a destroyed mansion. It happens all the time, I’m sure.

Important News

UPDATE: 12/15/17 – Never mind! Patreon changed its mind! 😀

Patreon changed its fee structure for patrons last week. I wrote up a post for patrons (current and future) to read on the subject.

Here’s the short version: I’m not happy about this change (I have yet to see a creator who is). It essentially kills the $1 a month pledge level by tacking on a 2.9% + 35 cent fee, to each pledge you make. So, your $1 a month pledge is now $1.38 a month.

The real killer is, this applies to every pledge you make. This isn’t a fee applied to your lump sum every month. If you have five pledges, you pay that fee five times. It’s insane. Patrons and creators alike are leaving Patreon over this.

Before the change, I ate the cost of fees for processing payments out of my gross. I had zero problems with that. The cost of doing business, etc. Now the fees are the responsibility of the patrons, which I do not like at all.

The Future

I’m sticking with Patreon for the moment. I’m waiting to see if they walk this back. I don’t have another option at this point, but Kickstarter is starting up their own Patreon-like service called Drip (but it’s not public yet).

Now, I’m lucky in that I’m not relying on Patreon to make ends meet. Not that I don’t appreciate what I take in every month. I appreciate it very much! It does help, and it’s more than I make off ads, for sure. I could stop using Patreon and it wouldn’t affect my life that much. That’s not the case for every creator, however.
