[dc]A[/dc]fter plenty of observational research, I think I know how our cats Nigel and Rags spend their time when we are not around. They must watch TV. Now, if they can get their kitty paws to work the TV remote or the PlayStation 3 controller to pull off such a feat is another story.
As the photos below show, our cats are fans of the moving picture—and each cat has his own taste when it comes to their viewing pleasure.
He Picks Up a Bus and He Throws It Back Down
Rags usually watches TV with Stephanie and I, but from the lounging comfort of his box lid on the ground. Yet, while watching the original Japanese version of Godzilla last week, Rags had to get a closer look.

I don’t know if it was the screaming in Japanese, Godzilla’s roar, or the sound of crumbing model buildings, but something got Rags’ attention. He watched intently for several minutes, long enough for me to snap a few photos. Maybe he never saw the original Japanese Godzilla before, and he was wowed by the stark difference from the American release (featuring Raymond Burr).¹

Or Rags liked the stuff swinging around on the screen that looked like giant strings.
Too Much Cute
Nigel enjoys cat related TV shows, namely Animal Planet’s cat-filled episodes of Too Cute. An episode with mewing kittens caused Nigel to investigate our TV.

While the above photo was taken over a year ago, mewing kittens on Too Cute still get Nigel’s attention. After I shot this photo, Nigel climbed on the entertainment center and batted at the screen. My heart melted.

Nigel is only interested in the kittens though, as the adult cats on the show don’t get his attention.
“Maybe he has a strong maternal instinct,” Stephanie said as we watched Nigel continue to bat the TV screen.
If Nigel noticing mewing kittens means he has a maternal instinct, I don’t wanna know what Rags’ attraction to Godzilla means.²

¹ The original Japanese Godzilla (Gojira) is totally different from the re-edited American release. Darker, for sure, and more serious. Highly recommended.
² Rags liking Godzilla is totally appropriate. He’s the Godzilla of our apartment. Which might make Nigel the Mothra or Rodan. Wait, maybe the King Kong.
