[dc]T[/dc]here are times, as rare as they are, when Stephanie agrees to watch hockey with me. Not that Stephanie isn’t a sports fan. Far from it—she loves college basketball and football—she just isn’t exactly an NHL fan.
Since I suffered through watched the Michigan State University and Duke game¹ with her, Stephanie returned the favor and watched Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings lopsided loss game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Fair’s fair, right?
The charm of watching anything with Stephanie, especially sports, is her stream of questions and observations—as our Star Wars marathon showcased. This, of course, leads to plenty of hilarity.
Goal Scoring
“What’s the most goals ever scored in a game?” she asked.
“I don’t remember.”
“What?! You can name every Stanley Cup winner since you were born, and you can’t remember the most goals scored?”
“It also depends on how you look at it. Do you mean goals scored by the winning team, or by both teams, or–”
“I don’t care how you look at it, I just wanna know what’s the record for most goals scored!”²
Blackhawks Captains
“Who was the last captain of the Blackhawks?” Stephanie asked while current captain Jonathan Toews was the topic of game chatter.
“I don’t remember.”
“It was only a few years ago.”
“I don’t remember.”
“Y’know, you could just name anyone and I would believe you.”
“Adrian Aucoin,” I snapped back.
“There you go.”
I brought up Wikipedia on my phone. “Huh. I’ll be. It was Adrian Auccoin.”³
Jordan Tootoo
“There’s a player named Tutu?” she asked after hearing the name on the play-by-play.
“Yeah,” I answered. “It’s spelled T-o-o-t-o-o and he wears 22.”
Stephanie shook her head. “That’s not OK.”
“There was a player named Heinze. He wore 57.”
“That I can get behind.”
“When Mike Commodore signed with the Red Wings, there was an Internet campaign to get him to wear 64.”
“Meh…I dunno.” After a slew of Blackhawks goals, she added, “I don’t think Tootoo is cutting it. They should send in Threethree.”
“Kris Draper retired.”
“What about Fourfour?”
“Bertuzzi is injured.”
“Fivefive?”
“Kronwall is on the ice, but he’s about a minus 100.”
“How about Oneone?”
“Danny Cleary is already out there.”
“Is there a Sixsix?” she asked.
“No, but if the Red Wings could convince Mario Lemieux to come out of retirement I am certain they would take him.”

¹ And she was not amused by my picking Duke to top MSU in my bracket as a joke. When my prediction proved true, I felt I was in danger, as I wrote about yesterday.
² According to statshockey.net, 16 goals in one game by the Montreal Canadiens vs. the Quebec Bulldogs in 1920. But, Wikipedia says 15 by the Detroit Wings over the New York Rangers in 1944 (winning 15-0). Then there is the total goal tie of 21 in a game, shared by the 1920 Toronto St. Pats and Montreal Canadiens (14-7, Montreal), and the 1985 Edmonton Oilers and Blackhawks (12-9, Edmonton). Shrug.
³ For a stretch in 2006, while Aucoin was out with injury, Martin Lapointe filled in.
