Friday Six: Pinball, Lasers, TMNT, Owls, and More

[dc]T[/dc]oday on the Friday Six: pinball, mini-comics, LASERS, owl handling, TMNT comics, and more.

And seven is RIGHT OUT

[ ] I’m a fan of pinball, and I downloaded a couple of video pinball games this week: Zen Pinball 2 and Pinball Arcade. I’m sure there are pinball purists who cannot abide video pinball, but whatever. I’m a fan—especially of Zen Pinball’s Boba Fett table. Comic pal and self-proclaimed ‘pinhead’ Ryan Claytor recommended I check out Pinball Arcade. It is a neat project—FarSight Studios painstakingly recreated actual pinball games I played over the years.

[ ] Speaking of Ryan, I attended a comic book signing on Wednesday for his latest batch of Comics and Visual Narrative students. Clem’s Comics & Games in downtown Lansing (where I spent Free Comic Book Day) held the signing, and I picked up most of the mini-comics. I look forward to reading them soon.

[ ] ThinkGeek Thing of the Week: Khet 2.0 Laser Game

Pew pew pew! Lasers simulated–DUH. Image via ThinkGeek.

Bounce lasers around a board with mirrors—kinda like the ending of Legend, except it is lasers instead of sunlight and…forget it. No one will get that reference.

This game looks like a bunch of fun—and it has LASERS. I’m a fan of anything with lasers—unless it is a Predator targeting thing on my forehead (there, that’s probably a less obscure reference).

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

by Daniel J. Hogan on June 27, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]L[/dc]ike most geeky lads in the early ‘90s, I was a fan of Star Trek. While I enjoyed the original series, I had more exposure to Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. It warmed my heart to see that both series are on Netflix Watch Instant (at least as of this writing). As I began re-watching Deep Space Nine, however, memories about how much I enjoyed the show came flooding back.

Aw yeah. Image via Amazon.

Prior to Netflix, I probably had not watched an episode of Deep Space Nine in at least ten years. When I first really got into Star Trek, Next Generation was on its way out, and Deep Space Nine was starting. As a result, I probably watched more Deep Space Nine episodes in my youth — I watched Voyager too, at first, but I stopped when they killed off Ensign Hogan (dang land eels!).

Don’t get me wrong, I like Next Generation plenty. But, there is something about Deep Space Nine I enjoy much more. Maybe it is the tension on the station, or how the characters treat each other. I love the scenes between Odo and Quark, with their game of wits and double-talk. But, there is also the touch of respect, to some extent, between the pair.

It’s Wednesday, So Here’s Photos of Cupcakes and Pies

by Daniel J. Hogan on June 26, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]N[/dc]ot that I need a reason to post photos of cupcakes and pies, but it being Wednesday, aka “hump day,” is a good a reason as any. Stephanie and I went to our friends’ wedding on Sunday, and I (thankfully) brought my DSLR (a Canon EOS Rebel T2i).

As promised, here’s a photo of the cupcakes. Set phasers to DROOL.

Yes, have some. Photo by me.

I can assure you, the cupcakes tasted as good as they looked. This, and the other two photos, is the result of shooting with my favorite camera lens: the Canon EF 50mm 1.8, aka the “Niffy Fifty.”

Behind the Scenes: A “Lazy” Saturday Afternoon (Photo)

[dc]N[/dc]ot doing much today, but I am keeping busy. HA. I’ll try to get outside at some point, but a busy week like this past week means spending some time working on a Saturday. And probably Sunday.

Keeping things STRAIGHT. Photo by me.

The blue lines didn’t show up as well as I hoped in the photo, but there are six panels laid out–including spots for text. This is for Monday’s comic (June 24th). It is about CATS. Shown here are some of the best comic making investments I made in the past few months: my T-square, my Ames Lettering Guide, Bristol board, and my Universal Pencil Lengthener.

Yes, laugh at the name, but my pencil lengthener is super handy. My blue pencils aren’t cheap, and my big hands cramp up while trying to hold short pencils. The ‘UPL’ makes holding short pencils easier, and I get more use from my fancy pencils.

Although it does result in friends teasing me with “Are you stealing pencils from golf courses?”
