Free Comic Book Day Recap

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 7, 2013 at 12:02 am

[dc]T[/dc]he Free Comic Book Day event at Clem’s Comics & Games was, in a word, amazing. The store set a record for foot traffic, well over 1100 people, and it also set a record for sales. Folks were already lined up at the door when I arrived just before 8AM. Always a nice thing to see.

You can see in the photo (that’s me in the plaid¹), I am hard at work sketching for a youngster (thanks to Cristen Rishell Mushong for the photo, via The Bait‘s Facebook page). Clem’s Comics & Games asked the artists to give free sketches to kids. We each had our own way of approaching it, but I did quick sketches on the back of my Clattertron promo cards, and inked them.

The requests for sketches ran the gauntlet from the expected (Batman) to the unexpected (the Ender Dragon from Minecraft) to the amusing (the Hulk dressed as Spider-Man).

What really caught me off guard, were all the requests for Sonic the Hedgehog characters. What is interesting though, none of the half-dozen requests were of Sonic or Tails. (Related: thank Batman for smartphones and Google Image Search)

Free Comic Book Day Minicomics

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 3, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc]s I mentioned in my Free Comic Book Day post, I decided to whip up a new, second, minicomic for Saturday. I’ll be at Clem’s Comics & Games in downtown Lansing (216 S Washington Square), 8am to 11am, for their Free Comic Book Day Event.

Time to fold! Photo by me.

I named this second minicomic, as the photo shows, Clattertron Favorites, Volume I. My first minicomic, The Proxy, will also be available, and both will only cost $1 each. If you pick up a copy of The Proxy, you can read next week’s comic a couple days early.

Clattertron Favorites, unlike The Proxy, collects eight of my favorite strips—not a new story. I figured collecting random Clattertron strips was a good idea.

Free Comic Book Day This Saturday! See Me at Clem’s Comics & Games

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 1, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]his Saturday, May 4th is Free Comic Book Day—one of my favorite days of the year. Not just because of the free comics, but because it is a celebration of comics as well.

The best day in May. Sorry, Mother’s Day.

Meet Local Comic Artists at Clem’s Comics & Games

Better still, I will be one of the local comic artists at the Free Comic Book Day event held at Clem’s Comics & Games in downtown Lansing (216 S Washington Square). Come visit me from 8AM (yes, AM) until 11AM—I technically will be at a table next door, in Downtown Subs (both places will have tables with free comics). I will likely stick around for a bit after my shift ends, if only to bug Ryan Claytor.

Here’s the full local comic artists schedule for Free Comic Book Day at Clem’s Comics & Games:

  • 8am-11am: Adam Talley, Sherief AbouElSeoud, and myself.
  • 11am-2pm: Kari Smith, Ryan Claytor, Marc Wolfe
  • 2pm-5pm: Sherief AbouElSeoud, Adam Talley

Swing through, grab some free stuff and buy one of my minicomics for $1. One of the minicomics is The Proxy storyline, and the other is a brand new minicomic collection of some of my favorite Clattertron strips.

I’ll have copies of The Magic of Eyri for sale too ($20, and includes both minicomics).¹

All of the artists are providing free sketches for kids, in addition to selling their own stuff. Yes, this includes me. I better practice drawing Wolverine and Batman faces.

Ocarina of Time, Pt. 8: A Song of Fire Temples and Ice Caverns

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 30, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]H[/dc]oly armadillos, the Fire Temple in Ocarina of Time is annoying. Invisible firewalls, narrow bridges, fire-covered bats, rooms filled with lava—I thought I would never finish the Fire Temple.

And I almost didn’t.

17th Time’s the Fire Temple Charm

The most annoying part of the Fire Temple was getting the megaton hammer. As I said before:

To get the megaton hammer, you must step on a switch, which drops the firewall around the treasure chest, and scurry across a skinny walkway—before the wall goes back up. A skinny walkway, mind you, above a freakin’ big hole.

I’m not the most agile when it comes to scenarios like this in video games. The camera in Ocarina of Time didn’t help much either—as it flew around like a drunk bat in the rain¹ while I ran down the walkway.

My Ocarina of Time sessions became solely devoted to me crossing the Fire Temple’s annoying, skinny walkway. Hours upon hours (well, more like minutes upon minutes, as I got frustrated pretty quick).
