5 Minutes of Stand-Up at Church of Comedy: I Survived

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 10, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]O[/dc]n Sunday evening, I took a stab at stand-up comedy. I told some jokes, in front of a live crowd. Yes, it was my first attempt at stand up comedy. As I wrote before, my friend Melik asked me to join the fun. He puts on the monthly Church of Comedy event at the Sir Pizza Grand Cafe in Old Town, here in Lansing.

With a microphone and everything.

Was I nervous? Sure. But, I prepared. I did my research and found that about 400 words is the recommended amount for five minutes of stand up (although I could have written a bit more, I think). I wrote up my words, and practiced, practiced, practiced.

Overall, I’m happy with how I did. I got plenty of laughs, but I screwed up a couple of times by going ‘off script’ – not that going off script is bad, I just stumbled to fill the gaps. The more I do stand up, the better I’ll get.

I didn’t memorize my routine word for word, or even recite it as such. I had the key points remembered, along with a few of my favorite jokes and just kept going. Writing the routine out ahead of time helped because I had a beginning, middle, and end. (Trivia: I started things off with the opossum joke from this week’s comic).

Shuto Con is This Weekend in Downtown Lansing

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 6, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc] fun event returns to Lansing this weekend: Shuto Con. It is a convention for fans of anime and manga (that’s Japanese animation and comic books for you Normals). Shuto Con also features a big focus on cosplay (“costume play”), especially interactive cosplay.

The River Trail will see plenty of Shuto Con cosplayers this weekend. Photo by me and via my Flickr.

Being a fan of anime and manga myself, I think it’s great there is such an event right in downtown Lansing. I interviewed Stefanie Shall, one of the convention’s founders last year for Capital Gains. Stephanie and her husband Joe were guests on Ginger and the Geek too (my old podcast).

Shuto Con continues to grow each year, and it brings a lot of folks to downtown Lansing—something I’m sure the local merchants love. It makes for great people watching, as cosplayers from Shuto Con walk up and down the streets all dressed up.

Like other conventions, Shuto Con features an Artist Alley and a Dealers Alley—where you can buy a lot of fun stuff and support indie artists and merchants. There are also tons of events, like panels, workshops, and more. Here’s the complete event schedule.

If you can only make one day, today, Saturday, is your best bet. The day is chuck full of stuff. Shuto Con is a must see for any fan of anime or manga. Just bring plenty of money, because I’m sure you’ll find stuff to buy in the Artists and Dealers alleys (I always do).

Jeremy Bastian Signing Cursed Pirate Girl Hardcovers Tonight!

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 5, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]M[/dc]ichigan’s own Jeremy Bastian has a signing tonight at the Eastwood Towne Centre Schuler Books. Jeremy Bastian will be signing hardcover collections of his comic, Cursed Pirate Girl.

If you have never read the Cursed Pirate Girl series by Jeremy Bastian—DO IT NOW. Jeremy Bastian has amazing, gorgeous work and it is super-detailed. This hardcover looks great (I saw a few the other day), and is worth every cent. Cursed Pirate Girl follows the titular heroine on her Alice in Wonderland-like adventures on the high seas, and features plenty of interesting characters. I bought a similar collection a few years ago and I devoured every page. I can only imagine how long each page takes–the amount of detail is breath-taking. For those wanting to introduce young-adult readers to comics, Cursed Pirate Girl is a great choice, as it pretty kid friendly.

If you are free tonight, swing by Schuler Books in Eastwood Towne Centre (2820 Towne Center Blvd, Lansing, MI 48912) and pick up a copy. You might want to pick up a magnifying glass while you’re at it, so you can really appreciate the teeny, tiny details Jeremy Bastian puts in his comics.

The fun starts at 7:00 PM. I plan on swinging by, so say hello if you spot me in line (I won’t let you cut though, sorry).

If you live in the Lansing area, make sure to check out the Schuler Books event calendar. They always have great events going on, especially the Eastwood store.

I’m Performing Five Minutes of Stand Up on Sunday

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 4, 2013 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, Humor, News

[dc]F[/dc]or some reason, I agreed to do five minutes of stand up comedy at this Sunday’s Church of Comedy event¹ at the Sir Pizza in Old Town. Well, I can’t lie. I know the reason. My pal Melik asked me. On St. Patrick’s Day. Fill in the blanks.

Yes, there is a little known bit of Irish folk-lore that no Irishman (me) can refuse a request on St. Patrick’s Day to embarrass himself in public. Think of it like the “No Sicilian can refuse any request on his daughter’s Wedding Day” bit in The Godfather, but with more jokes. ²

Five minutes. Five super-long minutes. I’m hard at work though, typing up jokes and notes.

women be shoppin

Comedy gold.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG

The fun begins at 6PM, but Melik suggests getting there early to snag a table/seat. It won’t just be me (Thank Batman), but plenty of other folks doing bits. I can’t say when I’ll be on either, but it suppose finish around 8PM.

And–it is FREE. Come on by, have a slice and a pint, and get a laugh or two. (Laughs not guaranteed during my set)

¹ Despite the name, there is nothing religious about this event. Unless I start making Cain and Abel jokes. ” Y’know what they said about Cain, he was hardly ABEL.” D:

² I’m Sicilian too, so Heaven help me if a daughter of mine gets married on St. Patrick’s Day.
