Clattertron Year One (Kinda)

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 4, 2013 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]T[/dc]his week (give or take) marks the first year anniversary of Clattertron, at least in concept.

Clattertron.com is not exactly a year old yet, I believe that will be in April or so. But, last January I began blogging with a humor focus on danieljhogan.com, followed by my comic strips, both of which I eventually moved here.

Regardless of the actual timeline, the past ‘year’ has been educational. Heck, Clattertron wasn’t even Clattertron at first. It had a different name, which I am glad I changed (it was dumb, and not very search engine friendly. Stephanie told me right away it was dumb, and I was a fool not to listen).

Even after (roughly) a year, I’m still tweaking this site and what I want to do. The comics are here to stay, as is the humor writing. The trick is finding a good balance between the two (and balancing everything else in my life). In some ways, I am still figuring out my ‘style’ and ‘voice’ with the comics and the humor writing, but I’m happy with what I have cranked out so far. Very few creations are a home run right out of the gate, aside from notable exceptions such as Firefly and ALF.

Cats Be Sleepin’: Nigel the Cat’s Day Long Nap (Photos)

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 3, 2013 at 7:00 pm

[dc]W[/dc]hen Stephanie has the day off, she is prone to texting me photos of Nigel, our cat.

To gutter-minded members of the audience let down by that sentence: sorry.

Today, Stephanie sent me a pair of Nigel photos, several hours apart. The first, a little after ten this morning, showed Nigel, curled up on my bathrobe, in its place of honor, crumpled up on my office floor.

Then, around 2:13 PM (Eastern), Stephanie sent another photo: Nigel, still fast asleep on my robe. She added: “I didn’t send the same photo twice.”

For your enjoyment, here are both of the photos (because there are not nearly enough photos of our cat on the Internet).

I’ll confess, I’m jealous. Photos by Stephanie.

But that’s not all: when I left for work this morning, around 8:40 AM (still Eastern), our darling cat was already snoozing on my robe.

Finally Finishing Ocarina of Time, Pt. 1: My White Whale

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 2, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc]t is amusing that the day I finished reading Moby Dick, I decided to play Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time again.

Yo Zelda, Where You At?

It is a valid question. Photo by me, via my Flickr photostream.

The game is my own White Whale.

I have started Ocarina of Time on several occasions, but never finished. And it tasks me. Yes, it does. There is an emptiness inside me for never having finished this game, like if someone grew up next to Andrew W.K. and had never heard Party Hard.

Rubbing salt in the wound is the fact I have owned the game for ten years, and it was the main reason I even got a GameCube: the system came packaged with a Legend of Zelda collection, and having never owned an N64, I had a chance to finally play Ocarina of Time.

And for being as big as a Legend of Zelda fan as I am, never finishing Ocarina of Time would be like a Tony Danza fan never watching Who’s the Boss?

At least, that is what the thousands of articles on the game’s supremacy would have me believe.

Having blogged my way through a few other games (Final Fantasy VII, EarthBound, and Cave Story), I felt a similar feat for Ocarina of Time would keep me on track.

At the very least, it will allow me to vent about Navi and her constant pestering.

Amazon Enigmas: 2012 Last-Minute Christmas Gift Guide

by Daniel J. Hogan on December 20, 2012 at 12:01 am

[dc]L[/dc]ike most folks, I wait until the last-minute to buy Christmas gifts.

Look, there are entire seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine I still need to watch on Netflix, and that takes priority (Sisko still has hair!).

Good thing I can count on Amazon for unique, last-minute, expensive ham-fisted attempts to buy someone’s love Christmas gifts.

yeti statue christmas gift

Classically handsome. Image via Amazon.

Take this ‘life-sized’ Bigfoot and/or Yeti statue. For a mere $2250, this charming hominid can keep a loved one company at home, work, or in the buried school bus they use as a bunker. While this statue might keep some of the neighborhood brats away, it might attract camera crews and guys in Gone Squatchin’ t-shirts.
