While I Was Packing, I Found My Investment Portfolio

[dc]T[/dc]he perk of packing for a move is, you can find important treasures in the process (or lose old friends. Seriously).

Anakin Skywalker Phantom Menace Pog

“This belongs in a museum!” Photo by me.

Like the time I found a binder full of my high school era writings. This time, the fruit was even sweeter.

I found my Anakin Skywalker Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace collectible pog. I am certain if I lock this away in my sock drawer vault, it will be worth a small fortune after a war destroys every other kind of Star Wars memorabilia, as well as anything else even remotely collectible (Beanie Babies, official Drive toothpicks, AOL installation discs).

This was not the only pog I have come across while preparing for The Move. I also found a pair of Mega Man X (ex not ten, for you Normals) pogs, as well as my Charles de Gaulle Action Pog Set, complete with the metal ‘de Slammer’ (historical pogs were the bomb back in my day).

With this cache of highly valuable collectibles, I will be living high on the hog when I am finally able to retire in 2092

She Shot Down My Idea for a Back to the Future Wedding

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 15, 2012 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] have lots of ideas, they aren’t always good ideas, but they are ideas none the less.

No one can accuse me of not being proactive in the Idea Department. One such instance of my proactivity¹ came following my engagement to Stephanie.

“How about a Back to the Future themed wedding?” I said, with tented fingers, wild eyes, and a geek-drenched crescendo.

“What?” Stephanie asked, stealing a rare moment away from gazing upon her Precious engagement ring². “What would that even be like?”

Since I was the one who popped the question (no doubt proving Mom wrong in the process), I had prepared a presentation about said Back to the Future wedding, complete with a slide show and accompanying 8 x 10 glossy handouts.

Here is but a sample:

Groom – Marty (with or without the crazy multicolor hat he wore in Back to the Future II)

I think that line from Firefly about hats applies here too. Image via ThinkGeek.

Bride – Jennifer (both in 80s gear)

Person Doing the Marrying – Doc (or Save the Clock Tower Lady, complete with donation can)

A Farewell to Couches (Well, Couch)

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 9, 2012 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc] guy always remembers his first–his first bachelor pad couch that is.

My loyal couch.

Last known photo of Striped Couch by Stephanie.

I had to part with my own, bringing an end to our seven-year partnership. Yes, it is time for me to put away childish things as I prepare to begin my life with the future Mrs. J. Hogan.

And by childish things, I mean a yellow-green-tan striped couch circa the Nixon Administration, not my boxes of LEGO or my Voltron toys¹ (fat chance).

Like the best things in life, Striped Couch was free. A hand me down of a hand me down, belonging to a great-aunt, and then my parents before me. It lived with me in two different apartments here in Lansing (five years, and two years), one of only a few pieces of furniture to do so (RIP beanbag bed, race car dresser, ALF end table, and hockey stick lamp).

Clarion Write-a-Thon: The End (Kinda)

[dc]T[/dc]oday is the last day of the Clarion Write-a-Thon, the daily writing challenge I have taken part in since June 24th.

I hit my goal of spending 45 hours editing my next fantasy novel, Riddle of the White Gun. I actually hit 46 hours instead of 45, which means Stephanie will have to shell out another 0.009 cents.
