Check out Doug TenNapel’s Nnewts

[dc]I[/dc] enjoy comic strips–they are short, fun, and are easy for the casual online visitor to sample (which is why I decided to try the ‘gag a day’ format). But, I really enjoy long form comics. Stories which take weeks, months, or years to finish. Being online makes such a comic easy to read–and it can become quite addicting to keep jumping to the next page.

One such comic is Doug TenNapel’s Nnewts (that is not a typo). Each update is a new page, and it is free to read. I’ve been a fan of TenNapel’s work ever since he created Earthworm Jim, and now I read his graphic novels are soon as I can (check out Creature Tech, Iron West, and Ghostopolis).

Nnewts stars, surprise, anthropomorphic newts in a fantasy setting. This is classic TenNapel, and one of the reasons I love his work: he’s not afraid to do something off the wall, unique, or strange. Each of his stories are so different, and very influential (at least to me).

And when you have finished the first few pages of Nnewts, check out TenNapel’s other comic, Ratfist–a superhero satire like only he can do.

[dc]T[/dc]oday was the third day of the Clarion Write-a-Thon, and I made some really good progress, as I finished editing the first chapter and began the second.

And then I went back and made some more edits to the first.

It happens. I think of changes after the fact, or after making changes later in the story, I need to backtrack. The trick to editing is to know when to stop. It reminds me of an old animation saying, “You are never finished, you are just out of time.”

Running out of time is key to remember–I need, or rather want, the final edit done by August 4th. I have 29 chapters to go after finishing the first (the chapters are short, only about 2,500 words, give or take), so I can’t spend a whole week editing just one.

[dc]T[/dc]oday is the second day of the Clarion Write-a-Thon, and it went much better than the first.

I was traveling yesterday, which was not conducive to writing, although I did jot down some notes and try to brainstorm.

For the Write-a-Thon, I am doing another edit on my next fantasy novel, Riddle of the White Gun. It mixes spaghetti Western action/tropes with fantasy and humor. Think Fistful of Dollars meets Discworld.¹

It felt great to get back to work on this book. I fell off the horse a bit while my previous final draft was being read by beta readers (which is my own fault, I should have kept writing fiction, even if it was something else).

[dc]T[/dc]here is one problem with all of these new fancy .MP3 players and the like (smartphones, tablets, toasters).

No, not their capacity being less than what is advertised (I paid for 20 gigs, not 18.4). Nor is it batteries that seem to die about every four and a half months, forcing working stiffs to shell out another $200+ to replace a fancy paper weight.

I’m talking about the guilty pleasures hiding in the shadowy corners of all those gigabytes.
