Capital City Comic Con 2016 Recap

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 30, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]his weekend saw the return of Capital City Comic Con in Lansing. OK, technically East Lansing, but whatever. Many fans came out to the show, and the entire day had a good energy about it.

I really enjoyed myself, and it looked like the attendees did too.

I felt a bit rusty, as this was my first show since early June, but I’m still happy with how I did. I got to talk about my new comic (Foxes and Boxes) starting here soon (hopefully next Monday), and catch up with several of my comic pals.

As a local show, Capital City Comic Con gave me a home court advantage: friends came to the show and stopped by my table to say hi, and in a few cases it was their first time seeing my table set-up and non-comic art (like my watercolor cartoons).

As I said the other day, I got a mention—and some art—in a Lansing State Journal article about Capital City Comic Con on Saturday. It’s neat seeing my comic (a tease of Foxes and Boxes) printed in the newspaper.

I’m In an Article About Capital City Comic Con

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 26, 2016 at 5:19 pm

[dc]S[/dc]ome fun news on the eve of Capital City Comic Con, I have a quote and art featured in an article for the Lansing State Journal about the event (written by Anne Erickson).

The art I sent in is a page from the new comic I’m starting next month, Foxes and Boxes. These new comics will still be on clattertron.com, it’s just a new story as I give long form comics a try. It isn’t the full-page, but most of the page. I’m hoping to start running the pages, one every Monday, starting in September.

The first six pages are finished, and I’m working on the next two. But, I really want at least eight pages finished (two months) before I start publishing. These pages take longer, so the larger the buffer I can start with, the better.

While these comic pages are more work, I’m definitely having a lot of fun, which is important. I’ll post a longer piece on the how’s and why’s of Foxes and Boxes soon, probably closer to the launch.

Anyway, give Anne’s article a read, and better still come and see me at Capital City Comic Con tomorrow.

¹ And yes, I bought foxesandboxes.com, it will redirect to Clattertron (soon). I might create a second website for Foxes and Boxes in the future, but that’s not a priority at the moment.

Where is Capital City Comic Con?

This year’s Capital City Comic Con is at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan, on the campus of Michigan State University. The Breslin Center is usually where unpaid college sports interns do things with balls and nets, but on Saturday the people there make money for a change (hopefully. Please buy all my things. I have a house to feed now).

How Much Are Tickets to Capital City Comic Con?

Tickets at the door are $12 and children under 5 are free. You might still be able to get presale tickets for $10 if you act fast.

What Am I Selling at Capital City Comic Con?

I’ll have my 2016 coloring book for sale, along with original artwork and my usual cartoon offerings (prints, stickers, commissions). Stop on by if you can! If the enthusiastic crowd at last year’s Capital City Comic Con was any indication, this should be a really good show.

It feels a bit weird to promote my comics while I’m still “on a break” while working on my new comics. But, I plan on starting up my new comics soon–I have the first four pages finished, and I’m already working on the next four. I would like to start in early September, but I would like having an 8-week buffer more. My new comics are bigger and more story driven, so there is more work involved.¹ A two-month buffer would definitely make things easier (yes, I’m still only doing one a week).

–

¹ But, in some ways these new comics are easier, because I already know, more or less, where the story is going. I’m not coming up with something totally new each week, as I did for the past four years. I think once I get in the groove, making these comics will go faster.

House Life: It Begins

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 11, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]L[/dc]iving in a house of our own is a new experience for Stephanie and I (OK, and the cats too). The actual move went smoothly enough, but our new home is not without its quirks. Our house used to be a rental for about four or five years (which we only learned at the closing), resulting in fun adventures for us since moving in last week—because some renters aren’t always on top of regular maintenance.

The latest: the dryer.

After our first social night out since closing on the house in May (we’ve been painting and packing), Stephanie told me the dryer, well, wasn’t really drying.

I checked it out, and while the clothes were warm, they were still really damp—and this was after over an hour in the dryer.

It was not a problem I planned on solving at 11:30 at night.

The next morning, as I got into my car to leave for work, I noticed the dryer vent hood on the side of the house. On a whim, I decided to take a look inside.

And then proceeded to pull out a wad of (damp) lint the size of my fist.

Finding the dryer’s manual online confirmed what I thought: the dryer didn’t really dry if the exhaust vent is blocked. “The vent should be cleaned at least every 2 years,” the manual said. Good to know.

Huzzah, now my Star Wars t-shirts will be nice and dry.

I wonder what other adventures await us? Oh, wait. The bathroom fan stopped working. I’m sure replacing a bathroom fan will be a lot of fun. What could go wrong? DON’T ANSWER THAT QUESTION. Ah, and the garbage disposal needs replacing soon. Don’t forget about the driveway needing some repairs. Plus the sidewalk out front by the tree.

At least the I can sit outside!
