The Move (and The Future)

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 10, 2016 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]T[/dc]he Move, as it shall be known, is over. Stephanie, myself, and the cats (Nigel and Rags) moved into our new house last Thursday. We said good-bye to apartment life, and hello to house life. It’s an adjustment for all involved: I have to mow a lawn, Stephanie has to live without streaming video for another week, new scary sounds for Nigel, and Rags must get used to climbing stairs.

Watching the cats get used to the house, specifically now having a basement and two floors, was my favorite part. Rags was a bit too enthusiastic on the first day, as he quickly started panting after a few trips up and down the stairs.

We also found out the day before he’s a few pounds overweight. Oops. Well, we’re all getting some extra exercise now (I lived in apartments for the past 11 years).

As our new life starts to shape up, I’m working on new comics when I can. I still plan to start posting new comics in September. Hopefully. If that’s the first week of September, or the last, I don’t know yet. It depends on how the next few weeks go. There’s a lot of unpacking to do, and as I said above we don’t have internet just yet.

I did manage to scan a couple of pages of the new comic, and part of the first one is available for my Patreon patrons to see. (Pledge at least $1/month and you get full access to all of my patrons only posts)

I’ll share this bit though: the story is adventure-fantasy, with my usual humor. However, as I said on Patreon, it is not an adaptation of my novel, The Magic of Eyri.

This new comic will certainly be similar in style and tone to Magic of Eyri, but I decided to do something different. Adapting Magic of Eyri would be easy in some ways: the story is done. But harder in others: I’m locked into that story. After a novel and a podcast, I’m done with Magic of Eyri for now (I would certainly love to republish it with a real publisher however, and write more stories in that world).

However, I might be recycling stuff from various novels and short stories I never published.

Don’t worry. No Filter Fox isn’t going anywhere either. He’s very much a part of these new adventures. The rest of the regulars will pop up here and there too.

A Short Intermission

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 26, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]here’s some changes coming. The big one is, Stephanie and I are (finally) moving into our new house in a couple of weeks. We closed on the house in mid-May, but spent the time after that painting and fixing things.

With the real move upon us, I decided to take August off from publishing comics. Comics will return in September.

The move will be a very draining experience, what with packing, moving everything (we hired movers though), unpacking, and getting our lives up and running again. Plus, getting the cats used to a house will be an adventure as well (see: stairs and hardwood floors).

To say the stretch of time since closing on the house in May has been stressful is an understatement. It’s been a rough road these past few months: spending all of our free time working on the house and packing, leaving little time for anything else. It affected plenty of things in my life, especially my output here.

I decided I needed to only focus on moving, and house things, for the short-term. This also means I canceled my appearance at the Michigan Comic Book Expo on August 6. I hated to do it, but our actual moving date landed right by the day of the show. (However, I am still attending Capital City Comic Con on August 27)

Regarding other changes, please note I said I would take August off from publishing comics. This doesn’t mean I won’t be working on comics (I will still write blog posts too, I’m sure). I’m going to use this “time off” to rethink my comics and what I want to do, and maybe shake things up.

I’m interested in giving serial, longer form comics a try. Stepping away from my usual ‘gag-a-day’ style and going more for character driven humor and stories. What this would actually look like, I’m not sure, but I’m kicking around a few ideas, and the time off will help me flesh things out a bit—or make me realize it won’t work.

When in doubt, I look at the content I’m enjoying. I’ve been reading a lot of long form comics (like Drive, Scary Go Round/Bad Machinery, He Is a Good Boy, and Back to name a few), enjoying cartoons with on-going stories (Steven Universe, Gravity Falls), and even serial podcasts (like The Adventure Zone, although interesting enough, not Serial).

Now, I’m not planning a 100-part epic or something. If anything, smaller stories, but maybe part of something bigger when viewed as a whole. We’ll see, as I said I still need to brainstorm this out.

After a little over four years, I think it’s time to experiment a bit and see where things go.

Listen to Me on the 2nd Brain Collective Podcast

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 19, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] sat down and chatted with a Lansing podcast recently: 2nd Brain Collective. The show’s hosts (Ash Harris, Courtney Maki, and Paul Schmidt) talk with Lansing, Michigan area guests about “business and marketing in the digital age.”

So fancy.

During my interview, I talked about how I got into comics, my comic making process, marketing and advertising, and finally using Patreon.

I also give a lengthy rundown of online comics which inspired me, and those I enjoy reading.

It’s a fun quick chat about all the crazy things I do here, so give it a listen.

As someone who hosted a talk show podcast for a few years (Ginger and the Geek), it’s fun to be on the other side of the microphone (see also: my appearances on Montreal Sauce and Film Frown). The funny thing is, 2nd Brain Collective records its show in the old Ginger and the Geek space at the Lansing Public Media Center. It brought back a lot of memories.

I miss doing a podcast at times, but I don’t miss all the work involved with a weekly talk show (mainly finding guests each week). This is why I don’t mind being a guest on other podcasts: all the fun, none of the work (ha). Thanks again to 2nd Brain Collective for having me on the show!

For Patrons: Behind the Scenes – Verbiage

[dc]M[/dc]y Patreon patrons can see the full scan of my original rough layout for this week’s comic.

comic behind the scenes

Here’s a taste.

Not a patron? It’s easy to become one. Just pledge at least $1/month and you get access to all of my patrons only content. Pledge more, and you get extra rewards! Your pledges help support my free comics (and keep the cats fed).

After viewing the original scan, compare it to the finished comic and notice how much this one changed. You will see in the scan how I went through different ideas, and even changed what happened in a few of the panels.
