Cherry Capital Comic Con 2016 Recap

[dc]M[/dc]ay is always a busy month, and this year was no exception: Free Comic Book Day, my first time at Motor City Comic Con, and my third trip to Cherry Capital Comic Con in Traverse City, Michigan.

Bonus content for Patreon patrons: a detailed breakdown of my sales (pledge $1 or more a month and get access to the post, and other patrons only content).

This year at Cherry Capital Comic Con was my best yet. I had a few return customers from the past couple of years, which is always nice, and I cranked out a record amount of cartoon commissions (tiring out my hand in the process).

Friday

The short “preview night” was Friday, which is always a gamble. I had a single sale, but in years past I’ve had more. The upside to arriving on Friday is I get all of my set-up finished and don’t have to do it Saturday morning. Plus there was the Drink and Draw event held in the resort after the preview night wrapped up.

The downside to arriving on Friday is paying for another night at the resort, and the traffic at the preview night being a big question mark each year.

See Me at Cherry Capital Comic Con This Weekend

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 25, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc]t’s back! No, not that green growth (…I hope). Cherry Capital Comic Con is this weekend! One of my favorite shows to exhibit at, Cherry Capital Comic Con takes place at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City, Michigan.

Hey, any excuse to head “up North” this time of year, am I right?

This marks my third year (year one recap, year two recap) exhibiting at Cherry Capital Comic Con, and I always look forward to the weekend. It’s a rare show where I stay at the hotel of the convention, which means I can easily spend time with a lot comic friends after show hours.

Better still, the crowd is great, and the main reason I always look forward to coming back.

Sure, it’s an expensive weekend with the hotel and the drive, but worth every cent (and a successful Motor City Comic Con made it easier to handle this year).

Where To Find Me at Cherry Capital Comic Con

I’m at booth number 604, across from the vendor row.

When Is Cherry Capital Comic Con?

  • Friday, May 27 – 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Saturday, May 28 – 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Sunday, May 29 – 11 AM to 5:00 PM

Ticket information is here. If you can only come one day, come on Saturday (or Sunday if you don’t like huge crowds, although Sunday was year was pretty busy too).

Come to the show if you can, and buy a funny drawing from me, or my new coloring book!

Motor City Comic Con 2016 Recap

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 24, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]here are times when I have to take a chance on something. And I don’t just mean the “special” at the local diner, I mean something big. The “big” thing in this case was getting a table in artist alley at Motor City Comic Con (May 13 – 15, 2016).

I was on the fence about trying Motor City Comic Con for a while, mainly because of the higher table cost ($250) and fear of being overwhelmed by the size. I heard this year’s attendance was around 50 to 60 thousand.

My table at Motor City Comic Con 2016. I tried a new set up with towers on either side of me.

It’s a big jump in terms of show size.

But, I pushed my concerns aside and rolled the dice. Boy, am I glad I did.

How Did I Do at Motor City Comic Con?

Excellent. Better than I hoped. I went in with low expectations because I didn’t know if my art would click with the crowd (every show is different), and because I was way in the back corner, facing an empty wall (not ideal, but I was a first timer, so that’s how it goes).

I wrote a more detailed breakdown of sales, with real numbers and stats, for my patrons on Patreon (become a patron for at least $1/month and you can read it). I use the Square Register app to track all of my sales, even with cash, and it’s super handy for seeing how I do at shows.
