See Me at Motor City Comic Con This Weekend

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 11, 2016 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]T[/dc]his Friday kicks off a big weekend for me: my first time attending Motor City Comic Con as a cartoonist¹. This is my biggest show to date, and I’m both excited and nervous.

Excited, because it’s a big show.

Nervous, because it’s a big show and I don’t know what to expect.

I kept telling myself last year I wanted to try Motor City Comic Con in 2016, and at least try it once. I’m a big believer in trying any show at least once. Why? Because every show is different and with it comes a different crowd. You could sell one or two books at a show, but then try a different show and do much, much better.

When Is Motor City Comic Con?

Motor City Comic Con is Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. That’s right, three days. Three day shows like this are a strange animal, because it spreads out the crowd. I like it, however, because I can tweak my set-up all day Friday before the big day: Saturday. Heck, Sunday could be huge too if my trends of the past year continue.

Where Is Motor City Comic Con?

Motor City Comic Con is at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan (46100, Grand River Ave).

Motor City Comic Con Hours

Friday: 12:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Saturday: 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM

Sunday: 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM

Advance ticket holders can get in 30 minutes early, according to the website.

Here’s information about getting tickets for Motor City Comic Con.

Where To Find Me at Motor City Comic Con (Table E-10)

My table is E-10, in the back left corner from the entrance, right across from the comic art exhibit called Dan’s Dream (no relation). Here’s a big version of the floor map (and not the whole map, either).

Watch: Essence Cartoon’s Interview with Me at SPACE 2016

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 10, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc]t SPACE last month, the team from Essence Cartoon interviewed me about making comics and self-publishing. The video is online now, so give it a watch (it should start right at my section).

[full video link]

I’m glad to see this video at last, and I mostly sound like I know what I’m talking about. Mostly. This isn’t my first video interview at a show, as you might recall my chat with MI Geek Scene last year.

And that’s not all! A local news station interviewed me on Free Comic Book Day at Summit Comics & Games (I haven’t found video of this online yet).

Free Comic Book Day Event This Saturday

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 3, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]he mother of all days is this weekend: Free Comic Book Day! Once again, you can see me at Summit Comics & Games this Saturday as part of the store’s annual Free Comic Book Day event.

What is Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May each year, and on this day participating comic book shops give away brand new comics. These comics are made specifically for Free Comic Book Day too, so they are usually one-off stories or something special.

The idea behind giving away comics once a year is to bring people to comic book stores who might not normally go, including younger readers. Most comic book stores use the day to feature sales on other comic books or special promotions as well.

Where is Summit Comics & Games?

Downtown Lansing, Michigan on Washington Square (216 S. Washington Sq. #B), right by Kelly’s and Zoup. You might have to park a bit away and walk over (there is free parking on the weekends).

When Does the Free Comic Book Day Action Start?

8:00 AM. Yes, in the morning. Pretty early on a Saturday for some, but heck that’s sleeping in for me. If you want first crack at the exclusive comics, you might want to show up sooner than later. The event comes to an end at 5:00 PM

When is My Artist Signing?

I am appearing at Summit Comics & Games’ Free Comic Book Day event at 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Other artists will be in the store, in different shifts, all day (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM).

What Will I Have For Sale at the Free Comic Book Day Event?

Time War: Content Creation vs. Distribution

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 27, 2016 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]W[/dc]riting last week’s post about decentralizing my comics gave me an idea for another blog post. It is related to posting my comics everywhere: the time I spend making comics (and blog posts) vs. the time I spend on distribution. (Note: this post first appeared on my Patreon blog)

One might think, “how long can it take to post stuff on Facebook?” Longer than you think, because I’m not just posting my comics and blog posts on Facebook. Facebook is one of eight social media channels I manually update (and I do double duty on Facebook: the Clattertron page and my personal account), the rest being Instagram, Patreon, Pinterest, Tapastic, Tumblr, and Twitter.

It adds up.

A few minutes here and there, not to mention preparing specific files for different social media channels (ex: Tapastic lets me make custom thumbnails for each comic).

Usually, I plan on an hour, each Monday morning (while I eat breakfast) to manually distribute my comics on social media or to schedule updates for later (like the Clattertron Twitter). The same goes, more or less, for when I distribute a blog post too.

And if the link preview doesn’t work on Facebook? Fixing it is another 20 minutes or so right there.

Is it time I would rather spend drawing or working on comics? Of course. However, all of this distribution is something I have to do.

I wonder though: should I spend less time worrying about making sure people can read my work or not? I don’t know. It is something very much on my mind, because the efforts of posting my comics everywhere can be draining at times. “OK, I’m finished with this social media site. On to the next…six.”

It’s a necessary evil, I think.

Even though the time would be better spent making my next comic, getting my work out there is important. As I said last week, there are some comics I only read on Twitter or Instagram, because that is where I see them. I’m working on building my own audiences on those social media channels, which means I have to spend the time posting.

I can say the same about making my coloring books. I love coming up with the ideas for pages, the drawing, and the inking, but I could live without handling the formatting, printing, and production side. The nuts and bolts side sucks, but I wouldn’t have a coloring book to sell otherwise (unless of course, I go through a real publisher. Hey, I would love such a thing).

Until I’m in a place where I don’t have to worry about spending time distributing my stuff, I’ll keep doing what I do. You don’t find time for such a thing: you make time.
