Drawing Conclusions Opens This Week, See Me at the Artist Reception Friday

[dc]T[/dc]he wait is over. Starting tomorrow, you can see some of my original art (and few prints) at the Drawing Conclusions gallery exhibit at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts.

See my comics at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts.

Drawing Conclusions runs February 4 until March 26. Stop on by if you can and look at all the fun art. Here’s a blog post I wrote with more information.

The Artist Reception is Friday February 5, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and I plan on being there. It looks like the weather will behave, so expect to see Stephanie and I along with the other artists. I’m planning on bringing some mini-comics to give away to add to the fun

I am very excited. This is my first gallery showing and I cannot wait to see everything on the walls.

I made a new comic just for the exhibit, on paper (and colored with watercolor paint), and it will be exclusive to the gallery for the next couple of weeks. The comic will run here on the February 15 (unless I get a last-minute idea for a Valentine’s Day comic and push it back, which could happen).

All of my art on display at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts is for sale, both originals and prints. I also included a few of my coloring books (which I signed).

If you can, please come check out Drawing Conclusions, and better still, come to the Artist Reception Friday night to say hello. You can see how awkward I am in person, which is always a treat.

Behind the Scenes: Faults part 1

[dc]T[/dc]his week’s comic used a new layout method: graph paper. Very high-tech, I know, especially for 2016.

But, I gotta say, I really like this new method.

All lined up.

Here’s what I did:

  1. I paneled the comic on a piece of graph paper.
  2. I lettered by hand (different from my usual digital method).
  3. I sketched the comic using pen (my Pilot G-Tec C4s).
  4. Then, I scanned the comic, as is, to my MacBook Pro.
  5. I emailed the scanned comic to myself.
  6. I imported the scanned comic in Manga Studio on my Microsoft Surface Pro 3.
  7. Using the scanned comic as a guide in Manga Studio, I inked the panels, traced the lettering, and redrew some of the sketches with a different colored pencil tool.

Behind the Scenes: Bad

[dc]H[/dc]ere is a look at how I laid out yesterday’s comic, Bad. Regular readers should recall I started paneling comics on paper again, and I’ve been happy with the result so far.

A strong foundation, yes.

Next week, you will see the first comic I laid out using graph paper. Graph paper makes figuring out panels a snap, and it cuts down on extra work I have to do in Manga Studio after importing a photo or scan.

I’m Taking Danielle Corsetto’s Patreon Illustration Class

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 22, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] always want to get better at drawing. I practice, I buy books, I read as many comics as I can, and from time to time, I take classes (like the cartooning class I took with Lansing artist Dennis Preston).

This time, I’m taking a different kind of class: an online illustration class via Patreon, taught by cartoonist Danielle Corsetto (Girls With Slingshots).

I learned about Corsetto’s class via her Twitter. The class is different in that to take the class, you have to pledge at least $20 per month to her Patreon. I believe I read the class goes through April, so $80 for an art class with weekly assignments for a few months sounded like a deal to me.

The online class is a light version of the college course Corsetto teaches in real life. This means she shares the same exercises and homework she gives her students, and we don’t have to worry about grades and such (or taking notes).

I signed up for a few reasons:
