Return of the Clattertron Newsletter

[dc]A[/dc]fter a lot of thought, I decided to bring back the Clattertron Newsletter, which went dark back in November.

However, I’m dropping TinyLetter and switching to MailChimp (who amusingly enough, owns TinyLetter).

Why I Switched to MailChimp

I enjoyed TinyLetter, I really did. TinyLetter is a simple, low-bandwidth solution for sending out newsletters—and it doesn’t claim to be anything more. I loved these aspects, at first, but the more I stuck with my weekly newsletter, the more the limitations became annoying quirks and the newsletters became a tedious task.

I realized, I wanted more options for layouts, customizing, and delivery.

Behind the Scenes: Rise Up

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 2, 2015 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] get asked how I write my comics from time to time. It usually starts with a joke or a concept, and I go from there. The dialogue comes to me as I go, and I tweak as needed. Here are a couple of photos of how I wrote this week’s comic (Rise Up).

Notes for this week’s comic, Rise Up.

These are my first notes about this week’s comic (it is difficult to see, but No Filter Fox‘s lines start in pencil near the top). The dialogue here is different from what’s in the next photo, where I tweaked the concept, and different from the finished comic. Yes, it’s a mess of sketches and text, but it makes sense to me.

Writing!

In the first notes, you see I had Tickles changing her Facebook profile picture at the start and the joke would be her changing her cover photo. Well, I decided Tickles changing her profile picture made for a better joke (and it could apply to other social media, not just Facebook).

GRASP Comic Expo 2015 Recap

by Daniel J. Hogan on June 30, 2015 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] appeared in artist alley at GRASP Comic Expo over the weekend. This was the first GRASP Comic Expo, and took place in the Deltaplex in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

GRASP Expectations

I really did not know what to expect with GRASP because it was a first year show, and a spin-off, of sorts, of the Grand Rapids Comic Con. The crowd at last year’s Grand Rapids Comic Con blew away expectations, and many artists, myself included, hoped lightning would strike twice at GRASP.

The attendance was nowhere near Grand Rapids Comic Con numbers, however.

Each show is different, even separate shows organized by the same folks. I wrote in the past on how not every comic convention is created equal. Many factors can influence the success of a show (the time of year, the weather, guests, proximity to other events, etc.).

Differences

GRASP had a different focus than Grand Rapids Comic Con. GRASP stayed away from media guests and wanted to showcase comic artists and writers (both indie and pro).

If you look at GRASP in a vacuum, and take away its connection to the larger Grand Rapids Comic Con, I felt it did well for a first year show of this kind.

I never fault a show for wanting to showcase indie creators, even if it means smaller attendance (see also Appleseed and SPACE).¹

GRASP By the Numbers

I took in $76 at GRASP, and my table cost $52. It was also an hour away, so counting money for gas I probably broke even, give or take. I spent Saturday night with friends, so I didn’t have to pay for a hotel (and I got to the Deltaplex early enough to avoid paying for parking).

But, what I can’t enter in a spreadsheet are the new connections I made, and the existing connections I strengthened while attending GRASP. Selling stuff at comic shows is great, but making connections, and seeing old friends, is even better.

Friday Six: Unicorns; Plume; Hand-Lettering; Neko Atsume

[dc]S[/dc]ix things on my mind or worth mentioning. In no particular order, because the only order I like is the kind at the drive-through window.

ANYWAY

Five isn’t enough and seven is excessive.

[ ] Unicorns: I learned of the lovely and darling comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson recently (via Boing Boing). Highly recommended. Very cute and funny. There are collections on Amazon.

[ ] Bang Bang: Speaking of comics I just started reading, there’s Plume by K. Lynn Smith. Also highly recommended. Start reading this engrossing western adventure here.

[ ] Fancy Words: Always looking to improve my skill set, I picked up a copy of the Hand-Lettering Ledger by Mary Kate McDevitt. I have yet to really sit down and start working, but it is a lovely book with all kinds of exercises to help learn hand-lettering skills.

[ ] Door Closes, Another Opens: I did not get into Grand Rapids Comic Con this year (it is a juried show), and no big deal. I started looking for other shows in the fall and learned of the Michigan Comic Book Expo in Taylor (September 26th). I sent in my form and table fee, so I should be all set.

[ ] Anime Nostalgia: I’ve revisited old anime favorites lately. I just got the itch for some reason, and recalled fond memories of the Sci-Fi Channel (Syfy’s name in the ’90s) running their Saturday Anime showings or the marathons in the summer. In the past week I watched Iria – Zeiram the Animation and Vampire Hunter D.

[ ] Cat Madness: I had to uninstall the Neko Atsume game on my phone. It’s a cute game, but there really isn’t any point or strategy to it, and it became a big time waster for me. I stare at my phone too much as it is, and I didn’t need another thing luring me in every few minutes.
