Inktober 23rd – Pasty

[dc]T[/dc]his is the time of year when I really enjoy a good pasty. That’s PAST-ee, not PASTE-ee, which is something totally different and not a food.

Gimme.

My fellow Michigoonies are (mostly) familiar with this popular dish from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s meat and veggies in a crusty pie. Tasty. Especially with ketchup (or gravy).

Steph and I cooked a bunch with friends a few years ago, but today’s pasty came from a local store (and made here in Michigan). Not as good as home-made, but still yummy.

[dc]I[/dc] came across a cartooning shading exercise yesterday, and decided to give it a try for today’s drawing. the center circle of light came from me tracing a snack container.

Shine a light.

I really put my Faber-Castell PITT brush pen to the test for this one, and it might be time to think about getting a new one. Inktober is almost over! Only a few more drawings to go.

Inktober 21st – Hands

Handy.

[dc]T[/dc]here’s a principal in cartooning about having good silhouettes for your characters–if the character (or whatever in the drawing) is filled in with black, can you still tell what the image represents? This goes for character design (think about SpongeBob SquarePants–his shape is easy to identify) or just what the character is holding or doing. It ties into another principal of cartooning: exaggeration. I probably wouldn’t hold a box all the way out in front of me in real life, but a cartoon version of me would look better if it did.

As I work to always get better, silhouettes is something I’m pay attention to while drawing lately. Today’s drawing was some good practice in this concept.

Inktober October 20th – Cat Bag

Kitty, kitty.

[dc]S[/dc]tephanie bought a new pair of boots, and the cats were just crazy about the bag. And the box. Both cats have used the back like a cave, while Rags really enjoys laying on top of the box–lid and all. I don’t understand why people spend money on cat beds.
