Surface Pro 3 Pen Hack: Add a Grip from a SumoGrip Pencil

by Daniel J. Hogan on September 9, 2014 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]T[/dc]he Surface Pro 3’s stylus pen isn’t the most comfortable drawing tool. While the pen functions well enough, it lacks in the comfort area—at least for me with my big hands.

At the moment, there aren’t any official replacement stylus pens (to my knowledge), so I was left with two options: suck it up and use the pen as is, or hack the sucker.

Hack It To Me

What I really wanted on the Surface Pro 3 pen was a grip of some kind, for two reasons. First, for comfort. Second, to keep me from accidentally bumping the two function buttons on the pen’s side.

My solution? I took the grip off one of my SumoGrip mechanical pencils.

A grip from a SumoGrip pencil on my Surface Pro 3 pen.

Let’s Slice

To make the side buttons usable, I simply sliced out one of the textured middle sections of the grip (using my trusty Leatherman C33TX). The textured section of the grip aligned well enough with the Surface pen buttons, which left out any guesswork when it came time to cut.

Sliding the grip down the stylus pen took some effort, but it was not too difficult.

I’m sure this will work with other pen or pencil grip you have lying around, but I had an extra SumoGrip pencil and figured Why Not?

Get a Grip

Adding the grip made the Surface Pro 3 pen much more comfortable and easy to hold. I also don’t accidentally click the side buttons, but can still use them if needed.

Until Microsoft (or some other company) starts offering more artist friendly Surface Pro 3 pens, this is an easy (and cheap) fix.

See Me at SPACE 2015

by Daniel J. Hogan on September 4, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]S[/dc]ome quick news: I registered to appear at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) in April 2015. This will be my second SPACE—you can read all about my first trip here.

See You In April

It feels weird to plan so far out for an event, but registering this early saved me some money (always a plus) and it never hurts to figure out a con schedule ASAP.

SPACE 2014 was my first time exhibiting at a big multi-day comic show¹ and taught me plenty. I will be better prepared for SPACE 2015 than last year, to say the least. I expect to take in more than $18 like last year.

I’m hoping committing to SPACE this early will inspire me to draw another multi-part story, like last year’s Chocolate Quest. I planned to start another one this week, but I was not happy with my first page. Regardless of what I end up making, selling a new book is probably a good idea.

The New Originals

My other goal is to crank out more original art pieces for SPACE, as well as GrandCon in a few weeks. I want to see if original art sells better compared to prints. I will still have prints to sell at GrandCon, and likely SPACE, but I want to try selling more watercolor art and other drawings.

I thought about this over the weekend while figuring out what to sell at GrandCon: if I had a choice between a piece of original art or a print, I would take the original.

Granted, the advantage of a print is I can sell it for cheaper. Original art is more collectible and has more ‘value,’ but I need to sell it for more. There is no reason not to offer both though. Prints for cheaper, originals for a bit more.

The Postman Draws Once

Stephanie bought me a pack of watercolor postcards over the weekend. Watercolor paper on the front, the usual postcard writing and address space on the back.

Mail it! Image via Amazon.

I’m eager to crank out a few silly and geeky one-of-a-kind watercolor postcards over the next week. I will sell these pre-stamped too (postcard stamps are cheaper and it might help move ’em better).

I will get some of these postcards in my Storenvy shop too (eventually). I might also offer to draw/paint and write a postcard to the buyer (or whoever they want)–and why not?

Just imagine. A postcard drawn by me, along with a heartfelt message (Ex: “Send lawyers, guns, and money. The s*** has hit the fan.”²) landing in your mailbox.

1 For comics. I did my time at Motor City Comicon and such selling my novel.

2 A random message I like to use. From the Warren Zevon song, Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Friday Six: Poorcraft; Spendee; Gadgets; Arkham City; Simpsons

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 29, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]Y[/dc]ou survived the week. Here’s your prize: six things on my mind or stuff I wanted to share.

[] That’s Sharp

I’m a gadget person, so multi-tools are a favorite. I picked up this Leatherman C33TX a few months ago and it is great. I wanted a pocket knife for a long time and a friend recommended the C33TX–and after I tried his, I was sold.

That’s a knife. And a bunch of other things. Image via Amazon.

Not only is the C33TX a knife with a combo straight-serrated blade, it also packs a caribiner/bottle opener, a flat screwdriver, and a Phillips screwdriver. The ‘quick release’ feature takes some getting used to, but is very handy.

Stephanie teased me a bunch when I got this knife, but honestly it more than paid for itself many times over. I opted for the black oxide blade, because I read all those Elric books. Sure. I almost never leave the house without my C33TX now.

[] Save Don’t Spend

Here is a comic book I wish existed when I graduated high school or college: Poorcraft: The Funnybook Fundamentals of Living Well on Less.

poorcraft comic

Full of great advice. Image via Amazon.

Poorcraft features advice and tips about saving money and living within one’s means. You can read Poorcraft online for free, or buy it through the publisher or Amazon. Poorcraft is beautifully illustrated and presents a very serious subject in an easy to understand (and fun) way. It will probably be my go-to graduation gift for years to come.

[] Track Your Spending

Speaking of saving money and the like, Stephanie and I started using the Spendee app on our smartphones.

Spendee offers an easy way to track your income and outcome throughout the month. One of the first things recommended in Poorcraft is figuring out a monthly budget. The easiest way to figure out a budget is to track your spending for a month (or two) and go from there.

After tracking what we spent on groceries each month, Stephanie and I came up with a weekly grocery budget—less than the average of our trips from the previous months. This required some adjustment, but sticking to a weekly budget (and going shopping once a week, regardless) helped Stephanie and I save money.

Spendee is customizable and lets you create your own categories, select icons, and even color-code your icons. I use one color for categories just for me (gas, food on my own) and another color for ‘family purchases (groceries, eating out, etc).

[] Strike That, Reverse It

I decided to postpone the multi-part story I planned to begin this coming Monday. I was not happy with the first (and probably most important) page i drew. I need to redo some of the character design stuff—but I will get back to this story at some point.

It is good to challenge yourself, but it is also good to accept when something is not turning out how you hoped.

Expect a new gag comic this coming Monday.

[] Simpsons Fever

If you are hungry for more Simpsons fun because the marathon on Fxx, I recommend this podcast interview with Mike Reiss on Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast. Reiss was a writer and showrunner on the Simpsons for years and offers up some great stories.

Reiss is also behind another of my favorite animated shows: The Critic.

[] Oh, Hi, Batman

I went back to playing Batman: Arkham City this week after leaving the game alone since, gasp, June.

I enjoy Arkham City, but I still love Arkham Asylum much more. Arkham City is just, I dunno, too much.

Something I found out the other night while playing: in Arkham City, the Penguin’s trusty monocle is actually a broken beer bottle shoved into his face. Yep. Creative, I’ll give the design team that for sure.

[] Wrap Up

This Week’s comic: Red Flag Car Stickers

Making fun of those sticker families you see on the back of cars. Because someone needs to, right?

Friday Six: Gilbert Gottfried’s Podcast, LEGO, Star Wars, Handmade Marketplace, Surface Pro 3

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 22, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]S[/dc]ince I moved my weekly newsletter to Sundays, I have time to bring back the Friday Six. Hooray. Six (give or take) things on my mind or links worth sharing. Because everyone loves lists and bullet points.

[ ] Listen to This

I started listening to Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Hilarious. I learned about it via the hockey podcast Marek vs. Wyshynski ( also worth a listen for hockey fans).

[ ] Look at This

A Build-on Brick Light Switch (for LEGO and other blocky good times). Finally, a reason to cover the dangling, sparking wires in my walls.

[ ] Speed of Light

While watching Return of the Jedi over the weekend, Stephanie asked: “How fast can the Millennium Falcon go anyway?” I quickly responded, “She’ll make point 5 past light speed.”

This was the wrong answer, because she wanted specifics. However, it was less wrong than “She’s fast enough for you, old man,” because calling my wife¹ ‘old man’ is never a good play. Regardless, Stephanie spent the next few minutes researching the Millennium Falcon’s speed via her phone.
