Commission: Watercolor Cartoon Cat Math Professor

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 8, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] wrote recently about my first cartoon commission, The Terror of Mechaplatypus, and now I am adding another commission piece to portfolio.

This commission came from a client, Meghan, in Portland¹, who wanted a portrait of her cat, Milhouse, as a math professor. It would be a wedding gift for her fiancé, who “is a serious math guy.” Meghan wanted math jokes on a chalkboard behind the cat, and the piece painted in watercolor.

Challenge accepted.

Meghan provided photos of her cat, Milhouse, and let me go wildwhen it came to the look of the piece and the jokes.

Commission Pencils

Not being a math person myself, I researched visual math gags for a bit. I knew I wanted to work in a reference to the math problem in the opening scene of the film Rushmore, at the very least.

Here are the pencils.

Pencil me in.

The good thing about math being around for at least, uh, a couple hundred years, is there are plenty of jokes. My research did not disappoint, and I came up with a couple of jokes on my own.

Commission Inks

Next came the inks, with my trusty Micron pens (and whatever else I had handy²).

Ink it to me.

You probably can’t tell by the photo, but the cartoon is 5”x7” in size. A bit bigger than my 2.5” x 3.5” sketch cards—always good to force myself to try something different.

[dc]G[/dc]et ’em while they are hot! New No Filter Fox t-shirts now available through my Society6 store in many styles and colors.

This shirt is so awesome you guys.

Foxy! Available in several colors and styles.

Everyone’s favorite mouthy fox and Clattertron mascot can live on your chest. WHAT FUN. You can also get this design on other items, like iPhone cases or tote bags.

Bag it! Via my Society6 store.

Bag it! Via my Society6 store.

This design started as part of a shirt I did for an upcoming family party, and I decided to strip out the party related text and make the image its own thing. Because, who doesn’t like cartoon foxes on skateboards?

Here’s a photo of the original sketch.

Aw yeah, line art.

You can see, I originally had No Filter Fox yelling “Surge!”, a reference to Coca-Cola’s Mountain Dew challenger of the 1990s. I decided I liked the illustration better without this gag.

I mean, I still could sell a version with NFF yelling Surge! That is the upside to Society6, I can have as many designs as I want.

Even though I drew the illustration on paper, I colored it using Manga Studio 5. This was only my second time coloring a picture in Manga Studio 5, but it went pretty smoothly.

I have ways to go before I’m comfortable drawing a complete picture in Manga Studio 5 with my old WACOM tablet, but practice makes perfect. Until then, Manga Studio 5 is great for coloring projects.

Grab your No Filter Fox t-shirt today!

Commission: The Terror of Mechaplatypus

by Daniel J. Hogan on June 24, 2014 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]I[/dc] am new to the art commission game. It is a fun game though, and helps me earn extra money. A commission is when a client hires an artist to draw/paint a picture for them. Easy.

Many cartoonists sell commissions for extra income—and it makes for great drawing practice too.

I’m working on a new commission now (it is a surprise gift, so I can’t talk about it yet), but I sent off another commission a couple of weeks ago—all the way to Tennessee (the state, not the stripper at the corner bar).

Here is the finished drawing, which my client, Katy, had framed and matted on her own (the drawing survived its trip to Tennessee).

She framed me!

Katy saw a photo on Facebook of a similar drawing (see below) I did at the Cherry Capital Comic Con and contacted me about buying a copy.

platypus drawing

The original drawing I drew at C4.

This meant I had to redraw the picture—which I was all too happy to do. The Cherry Capital Comic Con sketch I did in about 20 minutes, for Katy’s commission I could take my time (a few hours in this case).

It helped I had the photo of the original to base the new drawing on, so most of the logistics were already worked out–I just jazzed it up a bit.

Pencils.

Here are the finished pencils of Katy’s commission. I looked up images of the Nashville skyline to add a little extra touch (mainly, the ‘Batman building.’)

Final inks.

Now, with the finshed inks. I used a combination of Micron pens and Tombo brush pens (especially a N75, the gray).

Caturday Photo: Rags T. Cat Watches The Dark Knight Rises

by Daniel J. Hogan on June 14, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] wrote before about the viewing habits of our cats. We can add another chapter today. Rags apparently enjoys The Batman, specifically The Dark Knight Rises.

cat dark knight rises

Down in front! Photo by me.

Rags sat on the coffee table and watched most of the ending of The Dark Knight Rises. Maybe he felt the ears on Batman’s mask made him look like a kitty? I dunno.

This did make me wonder how cats handle large HDTVs. Sure, it looks real to you and me (to some extent), but for a cat, is it too real? Does Rags wonder, “Why can’t I smell them? I see them moving. I hear them.”

I do envy Rags’ better hearing, as I’m sure he was the only one who could understand what Bane was saying.
