Free Comic Book Day 2014 Recap

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 6, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]his year’s Free Comic Book Day Event at Clem’s Comics & Games in Lansing was, in a couple of words, a huge success.

Record Numbers

Not only did the comic book shop break last year’s attendance record, but I broke my own sales record. Yes, Free Comic Book Day was my best showing so far in 2014. I sold at least one of everything: my sketch cards, mini-comics, the Chocolate Quest comic books, stickers, prints, and sketches.

All in all, I did exceptionally well for only about five hours of selling and sketching.

Compare and Contrast? Maybe

On Free Comic Book Day, I took in more than four times what I did all weekend at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) last month. More sales in five hours versus two full days.

Practicing my artist alley table layout at home.

In a black and white comparison, sure, Free Comic Book Day was ‘better.’ You cannot really compare shows so simply though.

On Free Comic Book Day at Clem’s Comics & Games, I was only one of two to three artists in a small room. At SPACE, I was one of several hundred artists in a huge convention hall.¹

Yes, I made more on Free Comic Book Day, and in less time, but it was a more concentrated experience (plus, I priced most of my items differently than they were at SPACE²). Spending two days at SPACE allowed me to practice my talking with people and selling my wares—which paid off on Free Comic Book Day.

Free Comic Book Day also gave me a bit of a home court advantage too (and some people remembered me from last year). Being only one of a few artists at Clem’s allowed visitors to spend more time chatting with me (there is A LOT to see at a big show like SPACE).

Both events were great for their own reasons. I will happily do both again.

Friday Six: Sharing Buttons, Godzilla, FCBD, Star Wars, Ico, Chrono Trigger

[dc]S[/dc]weet-Mother-of-Batman, it is May! The month, not the Peter Parker aunt. April felt like it lasted forever.

The Friday Six is back, kids: six (give or take) things on my mind or links worth sharing. Because everyone loves lists and bullet points.

This is WAY cooler than the sunshade I made of duct tape and pizza boxes.

[ ] Sharing is Caring?

I know various blogging/social media gurus trumpet the importance of social media sharing buttons on a website. I don’t really ever use them though—except to share my stuff, usually on my phone.

Do you use the social media share buttons on a post?

If I want to share something via Facebook or Twitter, I typically use the ol’ Copy and Paste. This might be a throwback to The Olden Days when this was the only option. Old habits die-hard, as they say.

Sure, there isn’t a reason not to include the sharing buttons on a post, but I find myself tweaking those a lot (I said tweaking not twerking), namely finding a better WordPress plugin.

I’m always looking for better WordPress plugins.

[ ] Rar!

I’m super excited about the new Godzilla film coming out this month. /Film posted the latest international trailer and I’m giddy.

Speaking of big monsters, I ordered one of my Big Monster shirts from Society6 to test the quality, and it turned out great.

I’ll do a full blog post about Society6 t-shirts soon, but I’m in love. With a shirt.

Project Ico, Part 4: Almost There

by Daniel J. Hogan on May 1, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] am nearly finished with Ico. According to Gavin, I only have about an hour of video game fun left.

Of course, this assumes I don’t fall off a bunch of cliffs. Or get stuck and need to restart. Or lose Yorda to a gaggle of shadow monsters.

Ship It

In Gavin’s post last week, he wondered what I thought of Ico and Yorda’s relationship, specifically compared to Cave Story and Curly Brace.

I’m not finished with the game yet, but while I feel there is a strong relationship between Ico and Yorda, I felt more ‘attached’ to Curly Brace in Cave Story. Chalk this up to actually interacting with Curly Brace, versus merely guessing what Yorda is saying (her dialog is only translated as strange symbols).

Compare this also to the relationships of Ness and Paula in EarthBound, Cloud and Aerith in Final Fantasy VII, and Crono and Marle in Chrono Trigger. These all felt stronger to me, especially Crono and Marle. There wasn’t any hand holding, but there was plenty of talking with one another (well, one-sided conversations in the case of Ness and Crono).

For recent comparisons, look at The Last of Us and BioShock: Infinite. Both are ‘escort’ games like Ico and feature strong interaction between the main characters.

Granted, I still have a way to go in Ico and the relationship could grow on me even more. I don’t dislike it by any means, the relationships in the other games just felt stronger.
