May the Fourth Be With You: Star Wars Day is This Weekend

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 30, 2014 at 8:43 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]M[/dc]ay features a couple of my favorite days: Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day. Both happen on the same weekend, resulting in a geektastic perfect storm. Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday, May 3rd and Star Wars Day is Sunday, May 4th.

As in, May the Fourth Be With You. Darling, just darling.

If you need a new lightsaber or R2-D2 for Star Wars Day, ThinkGeek sells plenty of fun Star Wars items.

“I Love Lists.” “I Know.”

In honor of Star Wars Day, I decided to make a handy list of my Star Wars related blog posts and comics. Enjoy, and May the Fourth Be With You!

  • Amazon Enigmas: Geeky Leggings for fans of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Video Games
  • On J. J. Abrams Directing Star Wars VII

Star Wars VII Casting

The big news yesterday was the announcement of the cast of the upcoming Star Wars VII film directed by J. J. Abrams. /Film posted a great, detailed breakdown of the casting news for Star Wars VII. Give it a read.

As we all pretty much expected, the original Big Three (Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamil) are returning–at least for Star Wars VII. It will be interesting to see where story takes the original cast, and it is probably the best move to rejuvenate the franchise.

I will confess, I geeked out after reading Max von Sydow’s name in the casting news. He is, of course, best known for his roles in Conan: The Barbarian, Flash Gordon, Strange Brew, and some Swedish movie about chess.¹

Here’s hoping Max von Sydow plays a villain–part of me wonders if he just might be the voice of a villain.

Reading of John Boyega’s casting made me happy too. Not familiar with his work? Check him out in the great sci-fi romp, Attack the Block.

Like many other folks, I am a bit disappointed there are not more women in the cast–but maybe we haven’t learned everything yet. Fingers crossed.

Free Comic Book Day is This Saturday! See Me at Clem’s Comics & Games in Lansing

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 29, 2014 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]T[/dc]his Saturday, May 3rd 2014, is Free Comic Book Day.

As the name implies, there will be free comic books at participating comic book shops across the country.  Even better, I will be one of a few local comic artists/cartoonists appearing at Clem’s Comics & Games annual Free Comic Book Day event in downtown Lansing.

What is Free Comic Book Day?

New to Free Comic Book Day? Here is a handy video.

Time to Draw the Donuts

My shift at Clem’s Comics & Games starts at 8 AM and goes until 11 AM. I might get another shift in the afternoon too. Check out my Twitter feed for last-minute updates.

Clem’s Comics & Games provides the free comic books for visitors, while my cohorts and I in Artist’s Alley will sell our comic wares (sketches, books, merch, and so on). Bonus For Kids: Each artist will offer free sketches for kids. Last year, this meant a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog characters.

That’s right, I was a part of the Free Comic Book Day fun last year. That’s me in the plaid.

Both of my regular readers will remember Ryan Claytor and Jason Struz from my trip to the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) earlier in the month.

What I’m Selling on Free Comic Book Day

  • Watercolor Sketch cards

  • Random Sketches

  • Chocolate Quest comic books

  • Mini-Comics

So, everything I sold at SPACE. If any those items perk your interest, make sure to visit. I will probably be willing to trade something for coffee and/or snacks too. HINT

Caturday Photo: Nigel and Rags Play With Yarn

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 26, 2014 at 8:09 am

[dc]L[/dc]ook, we’ve all had a long week. Let us unwind with a photo of our cats, Nigel and Rags, sharing a bit of yarn.

“My yarn.” “No, my yarn.”Nigel, left. Rags, right. Photo by Stephanie.

I got the boys to play a bit of tug-o-war with each other, using this length of yarn. It was too cute. Nigel rarely plays with cat toys, but string always gets his attention, at least for a little while. Rags, on the other hand (paw?), will get toys out of cat toy box when boredom strikes.

One of the first things Rags did when we introduced him to Nigel was walk over to the cat toy box and start pulling out toys. Nigel was all kinds of confused.

Rags’ favorite cat toy at the moment is this Ethical Mini Skinneeez Chicken 13-Inch Stuffingless Dog Toy.

Yes, it is ‘meant’ for dogs, but Rags loves it just the same. He attacks the chicken, throws it around, carries it like prey. Too cute. Our li’l chubby predator.

Enjoy your weekend.

Project Ico, Part 3: Big and Tall

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 24, 2014 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News, Video Game Playthroughs

[dc]A[/dc]s I wandered around the world of Ico, I noticed the rooms and spaces were big and tall–in fact, pretty much everything was big and tall.

Go Big

Big, empty spaces. Tall towers and walls. Gavin touched on the tower and high building imagery in his first post—how such visuals are common in fantasy.

Everything is just big in some way or another in this video game. The fact the main character, Ico, is a child might amplify the appearance too. Compared to Ico, everything is bigger: even his companion Yorda (she towers over him a bit). Again, consider Sara’s post on the child avatar.

The scale of everything in Ico adds to the fantasy and wonder of the world. Ico features exaggerated surroundings, which has a subconscious alien feel: you don’t belong. The story is pretty much about Ico being somewhere he should not, so the visual style makes sense.

“They Didn’t Have Wookiees in Mind.”

In some of the large spaces, I can’t help but wonder what beings the rooms were designed for—assuming, for a second, the building is more than just a level in a video game, and part of a ‘real’ world.

The large spaces reminded me of a scene in the film Forbidden Planet. An ancient advanced race, the Krell, lived on a the planet of Altair IV, and died off long ago. Yet, remains of Krell society survive—technology, buildings, and machines. While the audience never sees what the Krell looked like, the surviving arches and doorways hint at their appearance. The door was not made with a human body in mind, and looks very different to us.

Forgive my shaky Photoshop tracing. Via Forbidden Planet.

It is a simple art direction trick, and an excellent example of less is more. All we know is, the Krell were big and not humanoid.

Ico uses a similar device with its cavernous rooms and tall walls. Just about everything is bigger than the player—including shadow spirits of various size–making the world equal parts captivating and unnerving.
