New Prints and Merch in My Society6 Store

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 23, 2014 at 7:48 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]I[/dc] added a couple new prints to my society6 store this week: Big Monster and Sleeping Dragon. Each are watercolor paint and Micron pen. They are scans of sketch cards I made for SPACE, and I plan to upload more soon (I’m also setting up another store to sell original sketch cards, which will be available soon).

Like with most of my other art on society6, these prints are available as other items too–coffee mugs and so on.

Shirt Alert! My first two t-shirts are available now.

There are many color options for this shirt–I just like how the blue looks here. I plan to order one myself, because why not? Big Monster is also available as a coffee mug–and represents how I feel before my first three cups of coffee.

I made a custom clock design for Sleeping Dragon (society6 lets you upload specific files for certain items, like the clocks, t-shirts, and coffee mugs).

Each of these designs is available as a print, coffee mug, and t-shirt (along with other clothes), so browse around my society6 store today–there’s a free shipping promotion going on at the moment (probably until the weekend). Shop now!

SPACE Recap, Part 2: The Good, The Silly, and The Funny

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 22, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc]s I touched on at the end of last week’s SPACE recap, any time a group of folks go on a road trip and share a hotel room, stories are bound to happen.

My weekend at SPACE (the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) was no exception, as I spent plenty of quality time with fellow comickers Ryan Claytor, Jay Jacot, Jason Struz, and Matt Dye.

The Ride Down

Ryan picked me up at 4:30 AM on Saturday. Yes, AM. I think I went to bed around midnight, but woke up on my own at 2:30. The excitement (sure) kept me from sleeping too much.

An unexpected perk of getting on the road so early: I saw a coyote along the highway. At least, I think it was a coyote. It could have been a sleep-deprivation hallucination.

The next few hours were a blur as I drifted in and out of consciousness, all while annoying the rest of the car with my snoring (sorry). I woke up in time to witness the ceremonial passing of the Flag City U.S.A. water tanks, near…somewhere. They are massive structures, covered with American flags and bald eagles.

We took a break from the long haul at truck stop, complete with showers. Not that we used the showers, or the cologne machine in the bathroom, but they were available—as the overhead speakers reminded us.

An added bit of charm: the truck stop used a sound effect I used on my Magic of Eyri Podcast (the chime which indicated a scene change).

The Big Buck Hunter

The truck stop offered a couple of video games, but most importantly it featured the hunting game Big Buck Hunter. Jay and Ryan went head-to-head, felling moose and what-not.

Then, came the bonus round: duck hunting. Jay fired with the patience of an expert. Ryan, however, laughed maniacally and shot like a man possessed. Or rather, as I pointed out later, like the Joker with a shotgun. “We should probably leave,” I said. “The Subway sandwich artists look a bit concerned.”

Our thirst for Big Buck Hunter was not sated though. Later in the evening, after a much-earned post-SPACE dinner, Ryan and Jay wanted a rematch.

We figured any bar near the hotel had a 50/50 chance to offer Buck Hunter or Golden Tee.

“There’s a couple bars,” I said, pointing out the passenger side window. “Podunk’s and Fitzwilly’s. With names like that, one of them has to have Big Buck Hunter.”

“We’re going,” said Ryan, maneuvering his stick-shift wagon across the lanes in Burt Reynolds fashion.

Ryan, Jay, Matt,¹ and myself stood outside the bars: Podunk’s on the right, Fitzwilly’s on the left. Which one to choose?

Project Ico, Part 2: Take My Hand, Leave the Camera

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 18, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]here isn’t a lot of hand-holding in video games. I can remember an odd example here and there, like in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but it is fairly rare.

Ico makes hand-holding a key part of the game-play, which is an adjustment—especially after my recent bevy of run and gun games.

Hold My Hand (Yeah Yeah)

Come with me if you want to not get a game over. Image via TV Tropes.

Ico, our horned hero, must lead his ghostly charge, Yorda, around by the hand. If Yorda is left alone for too long, the shadow-whatsits come and try to take her away.

At first, I had to hold down a button to maintain Ico’s grip on Yorda. Then, I saw there was an option in the menu called Hold Type B (or something similar). This made the game-play a bit easier, as Ico’s hold would lock until I pressed the button again.

An aside: I cannot help but think of the song Hold My Hand by the Beatles-spoof band, The Rutles while playing.

The hand-holding strengthens my relationship with Yorda—she isn’t just a character following Ico around (well, OK, she is, but also more). There is a stronger sense of attachment because of the hand-holding. Fellow Project Ico-er Sara touched on child avatars in her latest post, and I agree. I think the game would have a much different feel if Ico were older. Yorda comes across as ‘older’ than Ico to me¹, so a young kid looking out for an older one certainly plays up the innocence.

Compare this to, say, The Last of Us. Make Ico the same age as Joel and game feels totally different (not saying it would be better or worse, just different). I think there would still be a strong attachment, but on a different level–akin to the fatherhood vibe of The Last of Us.

SPACE Recap, part 1: Artist Alley Business

by Daniel J. Hogan on April 16, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]Y[/dc]esterday’s post featured a quick run down of my weekend exhibiting at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) in Columbus, Ohio. Today, I’ll go into a bit more detail, because everyone wants to read 700 words about my table set up. Right?

A Comic Fellowship

There’s safety in numbers, and savings in numbers. I rode down to SPACE with fellow comic pals Ryan Claytor, Jay Jacot, and Jason Struz. Additionally, Ryan, Jay, and I split a hotel room with Matt Dye. It was a weekend of bonding, jokes, and general goofiness.

It also helped the five of us were all near each other in our table assignments (SPACE lets you request your table neighbors), which allowed us to watch each other’s tables during bathroom breaks and such.

A highlight was when I explained Jay’s Tao of Snarky to a visitor while he was away. Explained, that is, in the loosest sense possible. “It’s got…lizard people…and…a noir detective…in space?” I stammered, as Ryan watched from the side and coached me like a teacher directing a middle school play. “It’s on another planet. And hilarity ensues. Except there isn’t any hilarity. Maybe.”

Jay, having a great sense of humor, found the anecdote hilarious and threatened to have me write the introduction to the next Snarky book.¹

Table Talk

My table layout changed a bit since the MSU Comics Forum. Here’s what I did in February.

Was I ever so young?

And here is what my table looked like at SPACE.

I spent a lot of time reading up on table layouts the week before SPACE.² Bringing my own tablecloth³ helped (hooray for bright colors), as did fixing my signs.
