Cats Watching TV

by Daniel J. Hogan on March 11, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc]fter plenty of observational research, I think I know how our cats Nigel and Rags spend their time when we are not around. They must watch TV. Now, if they can get their kitty paws to work the TV remote or the PlayStation 3 controller to pull off such a feat is another story.

As the photos below show, our cats are fans of the moving picture—and each cat has his own taste when it comes to their viewing pleasure.

He Picks Up a Bus and He Throws It Back Down

Rags usually watches TV with Stephanie and I, but from the lounging comfort of his box lid on the ground. Yet, while watching the original Japanese version of Godzilla last week, Rags had to get a closer look.

“My hero!” photo by me.

I don’t know if it was the screaming in Japanese, Godzilla’s roar, or the sound of crumbing model buildings, but something got Rags’ attention. He watched intently for several minutes, long enough for me to snap a few photos. Maybe he never saw the original Japanese Godzilla before, and he was wowed by the stark difference from the American release (featuring Raymond Burr).¹

Or Rags liked the stuff swinging around on the screen that looked like giant strings. Continue Reading

Caturday Photo: Rags Snuggles a Giant Mickey Mouse Doll

[dc]A[/dc]s I noted before, cats will sleep on anything. This time around, Rags snuggled with Stephanie’s giant Mickey Mouse doll.

Zzzz. Photo by Stephanie.

“Boyfriend Mickey,” as the doll is known, because of its size, belonged to Stephanie while she worked at Disney World several years ago. The doll was in the care of her niece and nephew for a spell, and now it will soon pass on to my nephews (which I’m sure my sister will just love). Until then, Hogan Manor is a half-way house of sorts for the giant Mickey Mouse plush.

This ‘doll’ is probably about three feet tall, which puts it squarely in Nightmare Fuel Range (speaking of Nightmare Fuel, consider this giant gummi worm). Yet, kids love it, apparently.

You could hollow this thing out and let a kid wear it as a costume, it is that big.  Or if your prefer, an alien. Like in Mac and Me.

Now I just need to find an alien to hide from The Gov’ment. Preferably one who isn’t bitey.

Cartooning with Watercolor Paint

by Daniel J. Hogan on March 5, 2014 at 7:23 am

[dc]A[/dc]fter coloring sketches with markers at the MSU Comics Forum last month, I decided I wanted to go a different route. Mainly, watercolor paint. Plenty of my comic pals use watercolor paint to jazz up their sketches, so I thought I would give it a try. While the fancy travel watercolor painting kits look nice, I needed to start small at first. A 99-cent watercolor set from Meijer worked just fine (for now).

Paint Me Like Your French Foxes

Hi, guy.

Here’s my first run, which I whipped up after getting home with my 99-cent watercolor kit: a quick No Filter Fox. I like the look of the color, and more importantly, I really enjoyed painting with water colors.¹ I’m still getting accustomed to the process, but I’m having fun.

I drew and colored this cartoon on Monday for Stephanie: a portrait of our two cats, Nigel and Rags. Again, I’m still getting the hang of watercolor painting, but I’m figuring watercolor techniques out as I go (how to do washes and such). The texture look on the Rags drawing came from a paper towel. I wanted to dab up some extra paint, but liked the streaky look, and it blended the colors closer to Rags’ actual coloring.
