Amazon Enigmas: Giant Gummi Bears, Gummi Worms, and Candy

by Daniel J. Hogan on March 4, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]W[/dc]hat is better than candy? GIANT candy. Everything is better when it is larger: pizza, glasses of beer, even gorillas. Here’s a list of giant candies I found on Amazon–because you need a five-pound gummy bear.

Giant Gummi Bears for Giant Times

Anything smaller is UNBEARABLE. OK, see ya. Image via Amazon.

When a regular sized gummi bear won’t do the trick, go for a giant five-pound gummy bear. Nibble it a little at a time, carve it like a Thanksgiving turkey, or use it for self-defense (get two and make bear-chucks). Kids bugging you for a pet and you want them to learn responsibility? Buy ’em a five-pound gummy bear and challenge them not to eat the dang thing. That’ll learn ’em.

Giant Gummi Worm = Nightmare Fuel

If you prefer giant candy more on the scary side of the scale, consider the giant gummi worm. Tipping the scale at three pounds, the giant gummi worm looks like something out of Tremors, but at least it is candy. If only more candy animals existed, like, I dunno the platypus or the sea urchin.

Caturday Photo: Rags Helps Me Ink a Comic Strip

by Daniel J. Hogan on March 1, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]he joy of living with cats is, they are always eager to help. And by ‘help,’ I mean, get in the way. But do so in such a cute way, it is impossible to get angry. I’ll take cats who want to be around me and get in the way over cats who ignore me any day. Nigel and Rags are my buddies, even though they don’t always grasp the concept of personal space or no don’t step there.

Magic Foot!

Case in point, Rags kept me company while I inked pages for my recent Chocolate Quest story. He even helped…in his own special way.

My Mews

Here’s another angle, either before or after The Foot Incident (at least the ink was dry when Rags plopped his foot on my drawing board).

Rags loves that box, probably as much as I love the Bose QuietComfort 15 noise cancelling headphones I’m wearing in the photo (worth every dang cent).

Happy Caturday!

Speaking of cats, the cat painting on the wall is The Vegetarian by Lansing area artist Kate Cosgrove.

MSU Comics Forum Recap: Artist Alley

by Daniel J. Hogan on February 27, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]his past Saturday, I appeared in Artist Alley at the MSU Comics Forum. This was my first outing at a comics show exhibiting/selling Clattertron comics. Nervous does not describe with enough detail how I felt, but I am glad to have my first show in the books.

Hi! Photo by Stephanie.

Forum Thanks and Forum Thoughts

First, thanks to Ryan Claytor and Jay Jacot for putting on an amazing event. Attendance was great (I’m sure the mild weather helped) and there was plenty of foot traffic (I think this year had the best attendance in all seven years of the event, but I’m not certain).

Second, I learned a lot. Mainly, I need to work on my signage. I threw together my signage, such as it was, the night before and the morning of the show. I played it by ear and thankfully Stephanie helped, putting her years of retail knowledge to use. Still, looking back, my signage could have been a bit better–but I really didn’t know what to do. Seeing what other artists did with their tables gave me several ideas.

 Mini-Comics and Sketch-O-Tron

I sold mini-comics and sold random sketches using a dice system created by Dave Malki (of Wondermark). I hope Malki does not mind me using his sketch system, but it looked like a fun idea and I wanted to give it a try (and I told folks where I got the idea).

Speaking of sketches, here is me drawing the first. The word combination was Owl+Dinosaur+Batman+Werewolf.

And here’s the completed version.

Harold Ramis

by Daniel J. Hogan on February 26, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]P[/dc]lenty of posts, articles, tweets and so on shared the passing of writer/director/actor Harold Ramis this week. I suppose I can, or rather, should add to the pile.

However, I don’t think I can sum it up better than this tweet.

ramis beatle tweet

By Bryan Young, @swankmotron.

It hits the nail on the head, in under 140 characters. For those of my generation, who grew up with Ghostbusters’ mighty stamp on pop culture, Ramis’ passing strikes a blow.

I’ll round this rambling out with a few Harold Ramis memories.

First, as someone who started wearing glasses in preschool, Ramis’ Egon character was a bit of a, I don’t know, spirt animal of sorts (along with his animated alter ego in The Real Ghostbusters). When you’re a little kid who gets picked on for wearing glasses, seeing Egon as an important part of the Ghostbusters team helped take the sting out. Egon was cool and smart. And Egon wore glasses. So my wearing glasses wasn’t so bad because of Egon. Sure, it is a silly kid correlation, but there it is.

Second, I remember the first time I ever saw 1987’s Baby Boom. I was young, perhaps too young to see the film (I sure as hell didn’t understand what was going on), and I remember seeing Ramis’ character, Steven, and wondering, “Why is Egon acting different? What’s going on?” Again, another silly kid correlation, as I didn’t really grasp the whole ‘actor’ thing at the time.

Third, along the same lines, seeing Stripes for the first time blew my mind. Saturated with Ramis as straight-man Egon due to repeat viewings of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, I was not prepared for his role as Russell Ziskey. At. All. Heh.

Fourth, I’ll end with one of my favorite exchanges from Ghostbusters.

Peter: Egon, this reminds of me of the time you tried to drill a hole through your head.

Egon: That would have worked if you hadn’t stopped me.

OK. Time to watch Ghostbusters again.
