Mini-Comics, Helper Kitties, and Coffee Stout (Photos)

[dc]I[/dc]n a rare Sunday evening blog post, I mentioned how I spent the weekend working on mini-comics. It was a lot of work, as I penciled and inked the remaining three pages of Chocolate Quest (part 2 ran yesterday), and formatted four other mini-comic collections.

MSU Comics Forum This Weekend!

All five mini-comics will be for sale this coming Saturday (Feb. 22nd) at the MSU Comics Forum in East Lansing. I’ll be at Artist Alley from 11 AM until 5 PM (free entry, and this is a kid friendly event).

Time to fold.

So yeah, I will spend plenty of time folding over the next few days. I would rather be folding than scrambling to finish pages though, as I can always fold comics while at my table on Saturday.

Do It Faster

I put in many hours of comic work on the weekend, as I mentioned to Stephanie:

Me: “I feel like I did two months of comic work over the past two days.”

Stephanie: “Well, that just shows how much more productive you could be.”

My wife, folks. Sure, I could keep that pace going, if I wanted to burn out and go crazy (although, it would mean not having to worry about comics for a month or two).

Cats and Coffee Stout

But, I had a bit of help during my long comic haul. Nigel and Rags kept me company at the drawing table.

I put the boxes on the table so they could hang out with me, but not walk all over my drawings (or worse, knock over my bottle of ink). If you are wondering what’s in the glass, it is a coffee stout made by a friend of mine. Because:

Writing, drawing, and inking my own comics has taught me: when in doubt, coffee stout.

Chocolate Quest Mini-Comic Test (Photo)

[dc]W[/dc]orked my butt off this weekend, and here is the result. I finished all four pages of Chocolate Quest and the final mini-comic is ready for printing. I penciled and inked three pages on Friday and Saturday, woof.

Mini-comic!

I am selling this baby at the MSU Comics Forum on Saturday, Feb. 22nd (11 AM – 5 PM, free admission!). I plan to have four other minis for sale as well (The Proxy, Culture Fit, and two ‘favorites’ collections of random strips). I will also sell sketches too, so please visit if you can.

This photo is of a low-quality ‘draft’ test I did at home–just to make sure my margins were correct (they were). I will print the final version at a print shop at full quality.

Pixel Heart Mug; BioShock; Cats; Inking Comics (Friday Six)

[dc]A[/dc]nother week gone, and another week I have foiled the cats’ attempts to murder me. Just barely though. Since Stephanie and I live with two cats now, the chances of me getting hit by a cat attack have doubled. Assuming Nigel and Rags can stay awake for more than two minutes at a time.

[ ] Cat Scratch’d: While playing with Nigel yesterday morning, he stabbed my fingertip with a claw (at least it wasn’t a knife. THIS TIME). One upside: it meant I could finally use my Pac-Man bandages.

Also I have a beard now. OR DO I.

Nothing like a cat claw in your finger tip to let one know their pain tolerance ain’t as high as they think. At least it wasn’t one of the fingers I use when drawing. NOTE: the hook thing in the upper left is one of those bag-hook-things, not an earring or an implant. All my weird implants are inside my head.

Have a heart! Image via Amazon.

When cold, the heart is empty (how fitting!), but when you pour in a hot beverage (coffee, tea, yak milk), the heart fills up! Perfect for a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift. Or an early Christmas gift.

Amazon Enigmas: Valentine’s Day Chocolates

by Daniel J. Hogan on February 12, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]G[/dc]et out your wallets, Valentine’s Day is this week. Show your love the American Way™ through the power of buying. Don’t know what to get your sweetie for Valentine’s Day? Here’s a list of interesting chocolates I found on Amazon.

Obligatory ‘Bone to Pick’ Valentine’s Day Joke

Yorick sure was sweet. Image via Amazon.

Dan Aykroyd has his skull vodka, which is a great gift the other 364 days of the year (ideally enjoyed in responsible moderation from a horn goblet while sitting on a throne of bone). For Valentine’s Day, consider a Chocolate Skull. Yes, a skull made of milk chocolate which is totally edible. Sure, it is $549.99 plus shipping, but imagine the look on your sweetie’s face when they open the gift box containing five pounds of chocolate skull.

Obligatory ‘Nothing Butt the Best’ Valentine’s Day Joke

Maybe I will skip this year. Image via Amazon.

While you are shopping for chocolate body parts, consider the other end of the spectrum, or should I say, body (although the opposite end of the skull might be the feet, but chocolate feet are just gross). The perfect Valentine’s Day gift this year just might be a chocolate butt. Put an end to your Valentine’s Day shopping with this cheeky—UGH, I’m sorry. I just can’t.
