Gifts For My Best Man: Cool As Ice on DVD and a Thor Statue

by Daniel J. Hogan on February 5, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]he Best Man gift is a sacred tradition, going back at least a dozen years. Maybe longer. I’m not sure if best man gifts were a thing in Ye Olden Tymes, but I looked to the past for inspiration. I needed to get my best man, Erik, a gift. After 43 seconds weeks of searching, I found the perfect items for a best man gift, or perhaps any gift: a wooden Thor statue and a copy of the Vanilla Ice film, Cool As Ice.

And that’s Thor as in the Norse god, not the Marvel/Disney character from the comics and movies. Erik is a fan of all things Norse, I think he even took a class on Viking Goat Law or something at Law School. I too share his fondness for all things from ‘the land of ice and snow,’ and he gifted me with a Viking drinking horn for acting as his best man (read my Prince-themed speech). Erik’s speech at my wedding was, as would be expected, Norse and Viking themed. Hilarity ensued.

Society6 Merch Review: Coffee Mug and Android Phone Case

by Daniel J. Hogan on February 4, 2014 at 12:01 am
Posted In: Blog, News

[dc]I[/dc] began selling Clattertron merchandise through Society6 recently. I’m happy to finally be selling something, even if someone else is handling the production/shipping side of things. Yes, I could make more money selling items on my own, but it would require time I don’t really have, and even if I made twice, or more, per item, it would mean more work.

Granted, if I find I’m selling a lot of items, then I would consider building a store of my own, but for now, Society6 is a good solution.

To check the product quality, Stephanie and I ordered a few items from my shop: a coffee mug, a phone case, a pillow, and a print. The pillow case has not arrived yet, and the print I’ll talk about in a separate post (comparing it to same print via Zenfolio).

Right through me! Get your own. Photo by me.

Here’s one side of my Coffee coffee mug (using this comic). I’m really happy with how this turned out.

GET IT. Speaking of, get one. Photo by me.

Worth noting, this mug went through the dishwasher a few times, and there is no sign of wear or fading (always a plus). Again, really happy with quality.

SPACE Bound: Exhibiting at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, Ohio

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 31, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc]bout a year ago, I decided 2014 would be my first year selling Clattertron comics at shows and conventions. I wanted to build up an archive of comics, and not worry about going to shows just yet—as conventions are a lot of work (but fun work).

 Get in Front of People

2014 is here, and next month is my first appearance of the year: the MSU Comics Forum.

I set my convention sights beyond the MSU Comics Forum though, and applied to exhibit at SPACE in Columbus, Ohio this April.¹ I’m happy to say I applied before tables sold out, and I will be attending SPACE, which is the first time I’ll ever appear at an out-of-state convention (I sold The Magic of Eyri at Michigan cons over the years).

 What is SPACE?

SPACE is the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo, and as the name implies, puts the focus on small press creators and comics. As the official website says:

[SPACE] is the midwest’s longest running exhibition of small press, creator owned and art comics. And Columbus’ only locally owned and operated COMICS show. Sponsored by Back Porch Comics.

As to the why behind SPACE, from the about page:

…All of the regular conventions became “Pop-Culture” conventions in an attempt to bring more people though the door. The net result is that the small press folks seemed to be selling less.

And here’s a quote from SPACE organizer, Bob Corby which further drives the mission statement home:

“SPACE is about the comics and the creators with no distractions. I’ve always felt a great creative buzz during the show.” – Bob Corby, SPACE organizer

I love events which focus on creators and the craft, which is why I always tried to attend the MSU Comics Forum over the years (and this year, I’ll be on the other side of the Artist Alley table). It is easy for creators to get lost in the sea of offerings at the large, pop-culture heavy cons,² and shows like SPACE and the MSU Comics Forum put creators in the spotlight a bit more.

I’m excited about attending SPACE!

–
¹. I learned about SPACE through comic pals, and fellow attendees, Ryan Claytor and Jay Jacot. Look out, Columbus!

². Nothing against pop-culture heavy conventions at all. I spent many hours and dollars at them over the years and always have fun.

Our Cats Love Boxes (Photos)

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 28, 2014 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] don’t pretend to understand all of Life’s mysteries. If anything, mystery makes life more exciting—just look at Murder, She Wrote (if you can find it on TV), if there wasn’t any mystery, the show would probably be Coupons, She Clipped. Boring, and then I have nothing to watch while I make a jug of sweet vermouth disappear.

One of Life’s mysteries I enjoy the most, after how aglets came to be, is why cats love sleeping in boxes. I probably get the attraction: we all like sleeping in cramped, small spaces. Well, at least I do, and my coffin supplier approves.

Nigel and the Box Lid

Upon adopting our first cat Nigel, I saw this cat-box-mystery first hand. Yes, I had heard the rumors, watched the GIFs, and read the memes, but never really spotted a cat sleeping in a random box in ‘the wild.’

Darling.

 Enter Rags

What I did not expect, upon adopting Rags this November, was to witness this act again, with a different cat.

Good grief. Photo by Steph.

I can’t handle this. There is too much cute going on here. Yet, Stephanie and I have yet to see the two cats sleeping in boxes at the same time. There’s probably some weird kitty reason for this, but it is probably for the best.
