And Then We Adopted Another Cat: Rags (Photo)

by Daniel J. Hogan on November 25, 2013 at 6:30 pm

[dc]T[/dc]he Hogan family grew in size today (our family, not the TV show). Stephanie and I adopted a second cat from the Capital Area Humane Society: Rags J. Hogan.

Hey, y’all it is Rags the Cat. Photo by Stephanie.

Rags joins Nigel as one of our fuzzy charges at Hogan Manor. Both are long-haired fellows, and on the big side. Nigel tips the scales at about 12 lbs., while Rags comes in at a hair over 13 pounds. Stephanie and I have a fondness for big cats, apparently. While the story of Nigel’s adoption is one of drama, crying, and table shopping, Rags’ tale is a bit more average: Stephanie wanted to adopt a second cat for the past year (basically five minutes after adopting Nigel). We met Rags over the weekend, and he was very friendly (always a good sign).

Nigel has to share his bow tie now. Photo by me.

I shared concerns about bringing a new cat home, worried Nigel wouldn’t like it (last thing I want is a kitty version of West Side Story or The Warriors¹playing out in our living room). Stephanie researched how to introduce cats to each other, and made her case to me. I agreed, and Stephanie picked up Rags this afternoon. Taking care of two cats is pretty much the same amount of work as one–I hope the boys get along with each other, but we’ll take it slow. Part of the reason we adopted another cat was so Nigel would have company during the day (he is a very social cat).

Of course, this means twice as many hairballs now. I told Stephanie though, she’s on hairball duty for the next six-months. Good thing we adopted rags before I drew this year’s Christmas card (now I get to draw TWO cats. Hooray).

Speaking of drawing cats, I need to get Rags in a comic soon. I was on the fence about keeping his came with the frame name, but I like how “Nigel and Rags” sounds. There’s a bit of a Pinky and The Brain feeling there.

Mom, true to form, responded to my email about Rags with: “Was hoping for a less hairy human addition to your family but will love him until other options come up!” (See also: I Think My Mother is Trying to Tell Me Something) IT BEGINS

¹ Although, gangs of cats and kittens dressed in silly outfits would be pretty darn cute.

Guess I Need to Wash My Cardigan (Photo)

by Daniel J. Hogan on November 23, 2013 at 1:16 pm

[dc]T[/dc]he joy of shifting to one’s Winter Wardrobe is finding hidden treasures from yesteryear in the pockets. I found one such treasure last night in a cardigan pocket: a ticket stub for Disney’s John Carter—which came out in March, 2012.

At least it wasn’t The Last Airbender. Photo by me.

Haha, OOPS. Guess I need to run my cardigan through the washer a few times. In fairness–or perhaps, in guyness–I use my cardigan like a blazer or jacket, so it is the top layer of a few shirts (usually combined with a hilarious t-shirt).

Mine kinda looks like this one, but less Hipstery. Image via Amazon.

Now, I’m a big believer in using pockets. If’n I have ’em, they are gettin’ used. This is why using my Winter Wardrobe for the first time is always an adventure–I squirrel away stuff in the pockets during Winter, and always forget until the next Winter (or two in the case of the John Carter stub).

This is also why I always find funeral cards in the pockets of my fancy cashmere dress coat. ANYWAY, happy Saturday.

[dc]I[/dc]t’s back, baby. I know I haven’t had a Friday Six in a spell, so here’s a new one, just because I love you, and because my medication kicked in. Sure.

[ ] Stan Sakai Coming to MSU Comics Forum: As I mentioned in the notes for Monday’s comic (Culture Fit, Part 2), Stan Sakai is the keynote speaker at the 2014 Michigan State University Comics Forum (Feb. 21st, 2014). This is a free event! So come on by. Sakai is known for his great comic series, Usagi Yojimbo.

Aw yeah, rabbit samurai. Image via Amazon.

I’m a fan of the series, so take my advice and give Usagi Yojimbo a read.

[ ] Time to go bye-bye, or boom-boom: Also on the comics front, I started reading the original G.I. Joe comics from the 1980s.

The cover is new, but the comics are all from the ’80s. Image via Amazon.

The comics differ from the cartoon show I grew up watching, in that they are slightly more serious and violent (folks actually GET SHOT and hurt). Worth a read, as there is A LOT more Cold War era stuff in the comics than the cartoons.

[ ] Geek Thing of The Week: This Doctor Who Talking Dalek Plush.

[dc]A[/dc]nother year, another Thanksgiving. Yes, spending time with distant relations usually leads to all kind of family awkwardness. Here are more signs you might have an awkward Thanksgiving this year (see also last year’s Signs You Might Have an Awkward Thanksgiving).
