The NHL Season is Here (And Not a Moment Too Soon)

[dc]T[/dc]he 2013-2014 National Hockey League (NHL) season kicks off this week (last night, actually). Thank Batman it does. Sure, I’m a big movie/comic/cartoon/Star Wars geek, but I’m an even bigger hockey geek (if such a thing is possible).

What my office would look like if I wasn’t married, probably. Image by Fathead.

For example, if I could get way with covering my wall with NHL team logos, I would. Stephanie probably wouldn’t go for it though, unless it was decals of little robots wearing NHL logo gear.

In honor of the NHL season kicking off, here’s a list of my NHL and hockey related comics and posts, from earliest to latest. Enjoy, and keep your stick on the ice. I hope to draw more hockey comics/write more humor this season, as inspiration hits me.

Meet Durkey [Photos]

[dc]W[/dc]hen is a duck not a duck? When it looks like a turkey-duck hybrid (likely the result of an alien breeding program, RIGHT?). Stephanie and I met such an animal at her dad’s place.

Note: not Disco Duck. Photo by me.

Duck + Turkey = Durkey?

Meet Durkey–his name really is Durkey. Durkey looks like the result of a duck and a turkey gettin’ busy—if such a thing is even possible (and going by what I know about duck genitalia, I’m gonna say no). While Durkey might look strange, he was a nice chap (like Sloth in Goonies). Durkey came right up to Stephanie and I, and acted more like a dog than a duck: he wagged his tail, panted, and wanted pets.

Friday Six: Kaiju Shirt, New Smartphone, World Building, WordPress Lunch ‘n Learn, Church of Comedy, Gym Time

[dc]T[/dc]oday on the Friday Six: A new smartphone, Diesel Sweeties on world building, a Pacific Rim t-shirt, WordPress lunch n’ learn, church of comedy, and gettin’ some exercise.

[ ] New smartphone ahoy. I went with the Samsung Galaxy S4 for my latest upgrade/new contract.

I’ll write about the phone more later, but I enjoy the S4 thus far. It came down to the Galaxy S4 or the HTC One, and my already having a previous Galaxy swayed me back to Samsung. The price of the S4 nearly steered me away (even though my new contract gave me a significant price break), but I know I will get my money’s worth.

[ ] If you are a member of the Central Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, I’m speaking at a lunch ‘n learn session next Friday (Oct. 4, 12 PM to 1:15 PM). I will talk about the differences between using self-hosted WordPress and blogging with wordpress.com. I’ll share some other blogging tips and advice too. Like cat photos. ALWAYS CAT PHOTOS

Using a Fellowes Laptop GoRiser as a Portable Drawing Desk

by Daniel J. Hogan on September 26, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] don’t always draw at home. Sure, drawing at home is ideal, because it means pants are optional—but, there are times I want to work on a comic elsewhere (and during wedding planning, there were nights I was not allowed to be around). I enjoy drawing at a drawing desk though, or on any slanted surface, which makes working on comics remotely a challenge (plus there is the having to wear pants).

Unintended Use

Then I got a Fellowes Laptop GoRiser. While actually a portable laptop ‘desk’ or cooler, the GoRiser works great as a portable drawing table.

I used a different laptop desk as a drawing table in the past, but it was metal, bulky, and wasn’t very portable (kinda like the first Iron Man armor). The perk of the GoRiser is, it folds up—it is thinner than my sketchbook and very light. The trick behind this is the flexible plastic loop the GoRiser uses for support, which allows the GoRiser to fold up to a more compact size.

Sketchbook is My Co-Pilot

Speaking of sketchbooks, you’ll need one if you want to use the GoRiser. Like most laptop ‘coolers,’ the GoRiser has holes for airflow.

Once I set my sketchbook down on the GoRiser though, the holes aren’t an issue. If I’m working on a comic, I clip a piece of Bristol to the back of my sketchbook. This might seem like a lot of work to some, but it this process paid immediate dividends for me.
