ALF: The Alien Life Form on My DVR

[dc]I[/dc]t says a lot about me that the first show I ever recorded with a DVR was ALF. No, not some new reboot. The original show from the 1980s. Yes, I now have access to a state of the art TV recording device, and I use it to record reruns of sitcoms from the 1980s.

Don’t judge.

Like most who share my 30+ years, I grew up watching ALF. I remember watching reruns after school as a kid. This might explain how I developed my own smart-mouth sarcastic humor (and perhaps, my fondness for cats). As a kid, the show’s draw was it had a puppet. But, as an adult, I get much, much more of the humor and enjoy its brilliant absurdity.

OK. I still enjoy the puppet factor.

I watched a favorite episode recently — where the Tanners (ALF’s Earth family) throw a Halloween party, and ALF shows up with a zipper taped to his chest to pass off as a guest (Some Enchanted Evening).

I’m still laughing. Yes, it was a cheesy, simple gag, but I loved it. The visual is hilarious on two levels — the zipper looks totally out-of-place, and ALF interacting with a room full of adults, instead of just the Tanners, really puts the focus on his shortness.

Ah, sitcoms.

The episode also has one of my favorite comedic reversals. I’m paraphrasing here, but it goes something like this:

Willie: Where did you get that zipper?

ALF: You know that old jacket you’ve been meaning to throw out?

Willie: Yeah.

ALF: Well, you might wanna hang on to it. I ripped this out of your new raincoat.

Ha! Classic.

I don’t care much for many new live-action sitcoms these days (notable recent exceptions: Arrested Development, The IT Crowd. If the list includes animated sitcoms, there are many, many more), but I will always watch ALF when I can . Maybe it is the connection to my youth, or maybe it is the humor.

Or maybe, maybe, I like smart-mouth puppets.

Friday Six: 8-bit Flowers, I’m Old, Rick Moranis, Pencil Sharpeners, Waffles, Superman vs. Batman?

[dc]T[/dc]oday on the Friday Six: Anything 8-bit is automatically cute, even flowers. Rick Moranis is still around, thankfully. I’m another year older–wiser is another question. I’m crazy about a certain kind of pencil sharpener. What’s the deal with waffles? And there’s news of an upcoming Superman vs. Batman movie.

Fireballs not included. WAIT. Image via ThinkGeek.

Maybe I could convince Stephanie to carrying this down the aisle at our wedding instead of real flowers? It is on sale now too, $9.99 instead of $14.99. Cute, cheap, and made of pixels.

[ ] This Nerdist Podcast episode with Rick Moranis is required listening. Hear how Rick Moranis spent the last few years, and stories about starting out as a DJ and his time with SCTV. Also: Rick Moranis has a new(!) album out, My Mother’s Brisket & Other Love Songs. (CD available too)

Amazon Enigmas: Cats, Kittens, and Unicorns

[dc]M[/dc]agic is all around us. Need proof? Browse the cornucopia of unicorn merchandise available on Amazon. Or take a hot shower, as indoor plumbing is pretty dang magical if you ask me. Cat and kittens are also magical and are probably loved as much as unicorns, give or take. I don’t have the Advanced Stats to prove such a comparison, but based on the my Facebook and Twitter timelines, I would it is a fairly even split.

Cat and Unicorn Lovers, Come Together

If you can’t separate your love, nay devotion, for cats and unicorns, don’t fight it. CELEBRATE BOTH. We live in a New Age, as shown by this cat unicorn poster.

Once bitter enemies, now feline and unicorn live in unity (…unicornity?).

I Like You, But I Don’t “Single Malt” Like You

[dc]T[/dc]he perk of living in a small-ish town like Lansing is, most of my friends know each other. This makes attending events less scary, as my chances of knowing someone besides Stephanie are much greater. Because, talking to people I don’t know, well ::shudder::.

Such was the case at my friend Suban’s birthday party last week. A sizable group of folks joined her at the recently reopened Zoobie’s Tavern in Old Town for birthday drinks. While there, I chatted with another guest, John, at the bar for most of the evening.¹

Our talk covered important topics like b-movies, the oeuvre of Andy Sedaris, fictional characters besting each other in random tasks, and the recent Red Wings off-season signings. While I explained the brilliance of 1987’s Miami Connection,² John decided to buy me a drink.
