Hudson Hawk: Love It or Hate It (I Love It)

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 10, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]M[/dc]y taste in film covers a wide area. If my tastes were a country’s land area, it would be Russia. Despite my fiancée’s insistence that I don’t like any film made after 2000—mainly because I had not watched Superbad until recently—I enjoy many films. My film collection would suggest as much, which ranges from Oscar-winning classics of the 1960s to b-movies of the 1980s, and many more.

One film that holds a place of honor on my shelf is the Bruce Willis vehicle, Hudson Hawk (1991). It is absurd, ridiculous, and preposterous.

The man knows. Image via Amazon.

And I love every damn frame. I love the film so much, I even referenced it in one of my comic strips.

I have a soft-spot for absurd action-comedies, and Hudson Hawk is my gold standard. It is also on the short list of films I have purchased in two or more formats: first VHS, and then DVD (Ghostbusters, Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness being the others. Star Wars and Indiana Jones will join that list eventually [Update: they did]. Gremlins, however, is the reigning champ: VHS, DVD, and Laserdisc—in that order).

But back to Hudson Hawk. To sum up, it is a love it or hate it film.

Folks I know who love the film, love it to pieces and quote it often (the film is incredibly quotable: “You took down Captain Bob’s steering wheel?!”, “Reindeer goat cheese pizza?!”, “Hey Mr. Hawk, I got your stamps.”).

But, for those who can’t embrace the absurdity, Hudson Hawk is the worst thing put to celluloid this side of Last Action Hero (worthy of a future article).

Is Hudson Hawk a perfect film? Hardly.

[dc]T[/dc]oday on the Friday Six: Wedding invitations, Build-On Brick Mug, digital Image Comics, Redshirts, Pacific Rim, and an early Boba Fett screen test.

And seven is RIGHT OUT

[ ] Wedding invitations are in the mail! Which means my sanity will slowly regenerate (not that it was in much abundance at the start). I drew the invitations and complied all the elements in Photoshop. I’ll have a post, with pictures, soon. Related: Stephanie and I were engaged a year ago last month. Time flies!

[ ] ThinkGeek Geek Thing of the Week: This Build-On Brick Mug!

Build-On Brick Mug

Yes, build some. Image via ThinkGeek.

Finally, a legitimate reason to have coffee stains on my LEGO. (…Which sounds painful). According to ThinkGeek, while this mug isn’t officially licensed by Big Brick, it is compatible with:

  • LEGO
  • Pixelblocks
  • Mega Bloks
  • KRE-O
  • K’Nex Bricks

To paraphrase Logan’s Run: “Build, builders!” And bring me a coffee. Make it two. BONUS FRIES: ThinkGeek has a 4th of July Sale right now, until July 7th. Get 20% off $40 or more. That’s a lot of LEGO brick mugs.

[ ] Congrats to John Scalzi for his novel Redshirts winning the 2013 Locus Best Science Fiction Novel award. Redshirts was the first book I ever purchased on my Kindle (roughly a year ago) and it is a fun read—especially, as the title suggests, for Star Trek fans.

BONUS FRIES: You can download the first four chapters of Redshirts to your Kindle for free.

4th of July Photoshop Hilarity (Photo)

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 4, 2013 at 5:46 pm

[dc]W[/dc]hile working on thank you cards for last weekend’s wedding shower, I noticed I picked an amusing name for the Photoshop file:

thank you master

Come crawling faster, and so on.

Yes, “Thank You MASTER.” Hilarious. It being the 4th of July only adds to the hilarity, at least for me. But then, I have a weird sense of humor. It also makes me want to crank Metallica’s Master Of Puppets, too.

I finished the thank you cards though–Steph wanted me to draw them, like I did the save the dates and the wedding invitations.

I need to put all of those finished images here, I may as well show everyone else all the work I put in–after we mail the thank you cards though.

Making Time: Operation Get Up Early and Work on Comics

by Daniel J. Hogan on July 2, 2013 at 12:01 am

[dc]L[/dc]ast week, I decided to take drastic steps to help improve my productivity—specifically, productivity when it comes to working on my comic strips.

Good, because I enjoy the shade. Photo by me.

I don’t consider myself lazy (Stephanie frequently encourages me to relax more), but I grew tired of working on my comics at the last-minute (in this case Sunday afternoon and/or evening). Instead of working all weekend on a comic, I began Operation Get Up Early and Work on Comics.

In short: wake up an hour earlier during the week and spend time working on a comic—every morning, Monday through Friday.

I don’t necessarily work for an hour straight—I move slow in the mornings before I fully wake up (due in part to medication I take)–but, 20 minutes here and there adds up, especially over five days.
