Behind the Scenes: Entitled

[dc]H[/dc]ere is the original sketch I used to make yesterday’s comic, Entitled.

entitled comic sketch

Working stuff out.

I’m still using my new method where I thumbnail/sketch the comic on paper, snap a photo, and use the photo as a reference in Manga Studio. I bought a pad of graph paper last week to make this process go even smoother: the graph paper will help me line drawing and lettering up better, and make paneling comics easier too.

I didn’t change too much from the above sketch to what ended up in the finished comic, although I did change the name of the movie on HB’s VHS tape.

Originally, I wrote Evil Dead 2 (a favorite film). I changed it to Short Circuit 2 in the finished comic, because I thought it was a funnier gag, and it mirrored No Filter Fox’s outburst. Sure!

You might recall HB’s love of the VHS format.

I’m a Finalist for the 2015 SPACE Prize in Webcomics

by Daniel J. Hogan on January 5, 2016 at 12:01 am

[dc]A[/dc] bit of good news: I found out I’m a finalist for the 2015 SPACE Prize in the Webcomic category.

space prize 2015 finalist

Thank goodness for alphabetical order.

SPACE is the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo held in Columbus, Ohio each year. I entered Clattertron while attending SPACE back in July (read my recap). Entries can only be submitted by exhibitors at the show. SPACE is a great show for anyone interested in checking out the small press comics scene. I actually bought a few books at SPACE in July, and I almost never buy anything at shows (when I have a table).

The prize for winning in the Webcomics SPACE Prize category is a $100 cash prize and a plaque. I like both of those things.

Judging for the SPACE Prize is, according to the website: Two rotating judges and the registered SPACE 2015 Exhibitors. So, if you had a table at SPACE 2015 in July, you can vote (I don’t know if voting is open yet though).

I like good news. This is a nice way to kick off 2016 (Clattertron was an entry for the 2014 SPACE Prize in Webcomics, but not a finalist).

A quick thank you to The Comics Reporter for mentioning all of the finalists too.

Speaking of tabling at shows, I’m slowly putting together my 2016 convention schedule. So far, you can see me next month at the MSU Comics Forum. It’s my third time attending the show. You can read the recaps of my first and second times.

More shows to come, stay tuned.

Amazon Enigmas: Ghost Chef (Cut Resistant Gloves)

by Daniel J. Hogan on December 29, 2015 at 12:01 am

[dc]I[/dc] always try to skim the Amazon Today’s Deals, because you never know when a) I’ll get a good deal on lime-flavored cocktail swords or b) find something funny.

Yesterday was a b day. Sadly. Still holding out hope for some  lime-flavored cocktail swords.

Behold this beauty.

cut resistant gloves

Wait. WAIT.

I will admit I’m due for some new glasses, but there’s something off here.

Ah, yes.

THERE AREN’T ANY ARMS.

GHOST CHEF!

I could use a ghost chef. Or any chef, really. How many years did Ghost Chef spend at Ghost Culinary school, I wonder? One hundred? Because Ghost Chef is a ghost and time is an abstraction which Ghost Chef no longer cares about, semesters could last centuries.

Maybe. Maybe.

The page claims to be for a pair of cut resistant kitchen gloves, but you can’t fool me. I know a ghost when I see one. Or don’t see one, I guess.

Behind the Scenes: Star Wars Reaction Comic

by Daniel J. Hogan on December 22, 2015 at 12:01 am

[dc]T[/dc]his week’s comic continued my new trend of sketching the comic on paper, snapping a photo, and using the photo in Manga Studio as my ‘pencil’ layer.

I’m enjoying the process so far, and unlike last week, very little changed from the original drawing to the final comic.

Here’s my original drawing.

comic sketch

On paper it was funny.

I figured out my panels on paper here, a big change from how I usually make comics since I switched to the Surface Pro 3. Still, these panels are guidelines more than anything. Same goes for the actual sketches inside the panels. They are a basic concept of what I want, not the 100% finished version.

Compare to the finished comic.

finished comic

Look!

A few minor changes here and there, which is bound to happen, but pretty close to my original sketch.

I’m still counting down the days until I get to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens myself. Christmas Day can’t get here fast enough. Warp speed! Wait.
