Behind the Scenes: Upgrade

[dc]A[/dc]s I mentioned in the notes for yesterday’s comic, I sketched the comic on paper, snapped a photo with my phone, and traced (more or less) the photo in Manga Studio on my Surface Pro 3.

It’s an idea I decided to give a try after using a similar method for a couple of new designs in my Society6 shop (here and here). I wanted to recreate a pair of watercolor cartoons in Manga Studio, so I decided to try tracing a photo to see how it went.

The process went really well, actually.

I felt a bit weird about tracing my art digitally, but as one of my illustrator friends told me: any time you can save yourself work, do it.

I decided, why not try it for a comic? It really isn’t much different from how I used to make comics: I drew and inked the comic on paper, then scanned it. It’s the same amount of steps, just in a different order (and better, because I end up with a higher quality digital image instead of just a scan).

Here’s the original sketch for this week’s comic, Upgrade.

Newsletter Archive #8 – Taking Notes

[dc]I[/dc] send out a new email newsletter every week through MailChimp (sign up here), and decided to back up my old newsletters here. This is Clattertron Newsletter #8 –Taking Notes from August 30, 2015.

I always try to carry a notebook, or a sketchbook, around with me. These days, it’s a tiny flexible journal by Miquelrius. It’s smaller than 4” x 6” and easily fits in my pocket (I picked it up at Schuler Books here in Lansing, but here’s a similar one on Amazon).

Notebook!

I like this pocket notebook, because it is easily to carry around, and it doesn’t have lined paper. I used to only carry lined notebooks, but that changed when I started drawing more.

Behind the Scenes: Christmas Song Barfo

[dc]Y[/dc]esterday’s comic went through a few changes before I finished. It happens. I start with a rough idea, work it out, work it out some more, ask Stephanie for advice, read it to the cats, roll some dice, and then make more changes.

I had a totally different idea for this week’s comic, Christmas Song Barfo, than what I ended up posting.

The original idea was similar to the final idea: a bingo card of overplayed Christmas songs.

I went so far as to make up a bingo card to figure out where to place songs, or at least how many I needed (25). Once again my Pilot G-Tec-C colored pens came in handy.

christmas song bingo card

My original rough idea.

I started a list of songs off the top of my head, but then I ended up referring to this Billboard chart to fill in the gaps. I had an idea to include different cover versions of the same song, because you hear a lot of cover songs during the Christmas season.
