Friday: Arts Night Out at The Grid

daniel j hogan arts night out the grid lansing

This weekend brings a double-shot of events: Friday night, I’m at The Grid in Old Town for Arts Night Out. Saturday, I’m in East Lansing for Capital City Comic Con.

Like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy says: Don’t panic.

I’ll have more on Capital City Comic Con in another post. For now, let’s dig into the goods about Arts Night Out at The Grid, an arcade bar in Old Town.

What is Arts Night Out?

From the Arts Night Out website:

“Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Arts Night Out was launched in May 2016 and is a bi-monthly event to expand and experience urban space and creativity in unexpected ways.”

To sum up: Arts Night Out gets local artists into local fun spots to sell (or at least showcase) their art. It’s a fun, great program which Steph and I enjoy even when we aren’t exhibiting our own work.

When and Where is Arts Night Out?

You might remember Arts Night Out, because I was just at another one recently. This time, the fun moves back to Old Town. Arts Night Out is this Friday, Sept. 7 in Old Town, 5 PM to 8 PM.

Bring your quarters and come find me at The Grid, which is a bar filled with arcade games and pinball machines. I felt my cartoony work would be a good match for place stuffed with video game characters. You can find The Grid at 226 E. Grand River Ave. Lansing, Michigan 48906.

I’ll be up in the loft of The Grid, so you will have to come find me. Don’t worry, The Grid isn’t super huge, and there’s only one set of stairs. You can’t miss me, unless you are too busy playing Dig Dug.

I will have original art and prints for sale, along with buttons and stickers. Come on out! It will be a great time.

MeggaXP Tomorrow!

meggaxp jackson mi

Tomorrow Saturday, August 25, you can see me at MeggaXP in Jackson, MI. At the moment, this will be my second to last comic/pop culture event of 2018. the last will be Capital City Comic Con on Saturday, September 8. I’ll have other events though, just more “art” focused.

Anyway!

Where and When is MeggaXP?

The good times are found at the Commonwealth Commerce Center in Jackson, MI on Saturday, August 25. The address is 209 E Washington Ave, Jackson, MI 49201.

Good news! The vendor/artist area is on the first floor this year, so it will be easier to find.

Doors open for VIP ticket holders at 9 AM and at 10 AM for everyone else. Doors close to the vendor room at 5 PM.

And that will end my stretch of six weekends in a row of events! I get next weekend off for a much needed break and vacation, and I’m back at it September 7 and 8.

What Am I Selling at MeggaXP?

For comic and pop culture shows, I tend not to bring as much original art (like my Monster Portraits). But, I will have some original art on hand, mainly my 100 Days Project watercolor cartoons. I’ll also have prints, stickers, buttons, and mini-comics.

I will also have my random Mash Up cartoons available: roll the dice and I draw the result. Here’s hoping I get to draw some funny stuff this weekend.

I’m looking forward to coming back to MeggaXP for the second year in a row. I’m happy to do almost any show within an hour or less drive from Lansing. It’s good to exhibit at events outside of town too, to reach a new audience and what not.

If you can’t make it, come out to Capital City Comic Con on Saturday, September 8!

Lemme tell ya: I’m very much looking forward to have a bit of a break after this weekend.

Imagine the Avenue: Arts Night Out Tomorrow

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 10, 2018 at 12:23 am
Posted In: Blog, News

arts night out lansing mi

My busy August continues tonight with Imagine the Avenue: Arts Night Out. What’s even better is, my wife¹ Steph Joy Hogan will be at the same event.

Awww.

So come on out tonight, Friday August 10 at 5 PM for a double shot of Hogan art. We’ll be selling art until 8 PM.

What is Arts Night Out?

If “Arts Night Out” sounds familiar, it’s because I did one in May 2017 in Old Town, Lansing. The idea of the event is to get art in places (usually local businesses) where people may not normally see it.

From the Arts Night Out website:

“Presented by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, Arts Night Out was launched in May 2016 and is a bi-monthly event to expand and experience urban space and creativity in unexpected ways.”

Case in point, last May Steph and I set-up shop in the Piper & Gold Public Relations offices and sold art. This time around, we’ll be in a vacant shop space in The Venue on Michigan Ave (on the 2000 block, right next to Strange Matter Coffee Co. and across the street from The Green Door).

To sum up: Arts Night Out gets local artists into local fun spots to sell (or at least showcase) their art. It’s a fun, great program which Steph and I enjoy even when we aren’t exhibiting our own work.

What is Imagine the Avenue?

Bear with me as I dive into some local Lansing inside baseball/other metaphors. Michigan Avenue is a main road in and out of downtown Lansing, and folks in the city want to give it an overhaul. Specifically, they want to give it a “road diet,” and take it from busy road to slower-paced, walkable/bikeable main street of sorts.

From the event posting:

“For one week, along one block of Michigan Avenue, we invite you to imagine how a “new” Michigan Avenue could look and function. Walkable, bikeable, shoppable … fantastic. Special activities are planned during the week. Come experience Imagine the Avenue and shape the avenue with us!”

This is why Arts NIght Out is on the Eastside of town this month, instead of it’s usually stomping grounds of Old Town. I’m all for a more walkable/bikeable Lansing, so I like this idea of shaking things up on Michigan Ave.

What Art Am I Selling?

A bit of everything! I’ll have prints, buttons, and original art for sale this Friday. Originals will include my (recently finished) 100 Days Project cartoons and my Monster Portraits series, including some of the big pieces I haven’t displayed since the East Lansing Art Festival.

Please come join the fun tonight at 5 PM!

And don’t forget: Steph and I are both appearing at Artfeast on August 18 in Old Town!

Featured Artist Friday at American Fifth Spirits Tomorrow

by Daniel J. Hogan on August 2, 2018 at 12:42 am

american fifth spirits daniel j hogan

Fun news, my darling ghosts and goblins: you can see me tomorrow evening at American Fifth Spirits in downtown Lansing for their Featured Artist Friday event on August 3rd!

What is Featured Artist Friday?

The event brings in an artist and lets them work in the tasting room, while attendees watch them work on art (and enjoy American Fifth’s drinks). Raffle tickets are sold for the piece the artist is working on, with the winner picked at the end of the night. Here’s the great news: all of the ticket sales go to the artist.

To sum up: Come out to American Fifth Spirits this Friday, order a fancy cocktail or two, and watch me create a new watercolor Monster Portraits cartoon. Buy a raffle ticket, or 12, and you might win a brand new piece of original art, by me. The fun starts at 7PM. There’s no cost to attend, other than what you order to drink or eat.

Where is American Fifth Spirits?

You can find the distillery and its cozy tasting room right in downtown Lansing, across the street from the stadium where the Lugnuts play: 112 N Larch St, Lansing, Michigan 48912.

Here’s a map!

Details

The event starts this Friday, August 8, at 7PM and goes until 9 or so, and there’s the raffle for the art I created. Come on out if you can!

More fun news! I’m bringing some things to sell at my table while I work. I’ll have my 100 Day Project originals, some prints, and a framed Monster Portrait or two. I won’t have a ton of space, and I’m only there for two or three hours, so I’m not doing a full set-up.

Speaking of full set-ups, you can see such a thing next Friday at Arts Night out! More details next week, but I will be in an empty space near Strange Matter Coffee Co.

Here’s my other upcoming events for the next month:

  • Aug. 18 – Old Town, Lansing, MI – Artfeast
  • Aug. 25 – Jackson, MI – MeggaXP IV
  • Sept. 8 – East Lansing, MI – Capital City Comic Con
