Free Comic Book Day 2018 at The Comic Signal

free comic book day 2018

Tomorrow, May 5 2018 is Free Comic Book Day. It’s pretty much my Black Friday (…Saturday?) in that it’s a big day for me. It also kicks off my Month of Crazy (aka “May“), where I’m appearing somewhere three out of four weekends (and it’s my third weekend appearance in a row).

For this year’s Free Comic Book Day, I’m appearing at The Comic Signal in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What is Free Comic Book Day?

It’s a day with free comics! However, this doesn’t mean you can walk out of the store with anything for free. Nah. Publishers make special Free Comic Book Day comics you can take home. The idea is to get old and new (especially new) comic book fans down to their local comic shop. The free comics are (usually) one-shot books, and there’s always a great selection for readers of all ages.

I suggest you get to your local comic shop as soon as possible. There’s a good chance a book you want could be gone if you don’t show up right away.

Keep in mind, some stores have certain rules about how many books you can take (especially if you are one of the first in the door). Be nice! Continue Reading

Clinton Macomb Public Library Comic Con on Saturday

My convention season continues picking up, as this Saturday brings the Clinton Macomb Public Library Comic Con (CMPLCC). This is my second event for April, and it makes two Saturdays in a row. It’s also my second of five events in six weeks.

HAHAHAHA.

Gulp.

Yeah, May’s gonna be crazy. I have Free Comic Book Day (next weekend!), the East Lansing Art Festival, and then Cherry Capital Comic Con. I only have one weekend off in May, and thankfully it’s the weekend before the East Lansing Art Festival.

ANYWAY! Back to this weekend. Continue Reading

REO Town Pop Up Market This Saturday

reo town marketplace pop up april 21

Hopefully the 7th Winter we’re experiencing here in Michigan is over by this weekend so y’all can come see me at the REO Town Marketplace April Pop Up. I’m back again, selling my arts and comics. The event is free to attend, so swing by!

Where and When is the April Pop Up Market?

The fun starts at 10 AM on Saturday, April 21st in Lansing’s REO Town, at the REO Town Marketplace (1027 S. Washington Ave, Lansing, MI) and goes until 5 PM. The REO Town Marketplace is a multi-use building that allows artists and artisans to set up shop for the day. Here’s a map!

In a lot of ways, it’s like my usual artist alleys at comic cons. In other ways, it is different, and closer to my appearance at the East Lansing Art Festival next month.

I definitely get more space at the Pop Up Market than I ever do in any artist alley. A 10 ft x 10 ft space compared to a single table. Last time, I didn’t really use that space to its full potential. This time I plan on doing so. I’m treating this as a pseudo test run for the East Lansing Art Festival and trying out my new display set-up.

Michigan State University Comics Forum This Saturday

msu comics forum 2018

If you want to see me in all three dimensions, head out to the Michigan State University Comics Forum this Saturday. The MSU Comics Forum is a FREE event, so there’s no reason not to come out! Unless you don’t like the outside, which I can definitely understand–but there will be comics!

Michigan State University Comics Forum Creator and Scholar Keynotes

But, before the fun begins on Saturday, comes out on Friday night for the free creator keynote address. This year’s speaker is cartoonist Lucy Knisley. I’ve followed her work for years online and highly recommend her books Something New and Relish. The Creator Keynote is Friday, Feb. 23 at 7PM in the Green Room of the MSU Main Library. I’m looking forward to this!

On Saturday, the Scholar Keynote is by award-winning editor, Diana Schutz. She’s had a long career in comics and worked with a lot of big names, including Will Eisner, Frank Miller, and Stan Sakai to name only a few. The Scholar Keynote is on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 12:15 PM in the Smart Classroom of the MSU Main Library. Unfortunately, this is during the artist alley hours, so I can’t attend.

More information is available on the Schedule page.
